Your wireless router should have come with software, which allows you to set a password on it. Install the software on your PC. Then run it. It should discover the router. You log in with

username: admin
password: admin

then you should be able to set the password.

Another way into the admin interface, is to type the IP address in your Internet browser if you know it (often 192.168.1.1)

I want to secure an unsecured linksys router

Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

My Router works only if I do not put security password on it.

The router works only if the network is unsecured.
When you secure the wireless network , make sure that you will change the wireless network name also. Because if you change the wireless security and if you keep the same network name then your computer will try to connect to the same network name with the old unsecured settings saved on the computer.
Try to change the SSID ( network name ) and security to WPA, check if that works.
If that doesn't work then I believe you will need to upgrade the FIRMWARE of the router.

Renaming Linksys BEFSX41 router and securing it.

It sound to me that you have a wireless card in your laptop and you are picking up your neighbors wireless router!!!! which has no SSID set, thus "default" and has no encryption set, thus "unsecured network". Turn off your wireless adapter The only security on a Non-Wireless router is turning on the firewall. It should be enabled by default. The other thing would be to change the password on your router, but since you do not have a wireless router, then it is pointless, unless you do not want someone in your house to access the router settings and make changes. Ever then, if someone in your house that is physically connected to the router with a "cable" could alway walk to the router and stick a pin in the the "reset" hole in the back of the router to reset wipe any changes that was made, so a password is pointless as far as I am concerned for non-wirelss routers. open your browser and type http://192.168.1.1 Admin User name: Leave it blank Password: admin Once you login you can change your password if you like.
