Flip video won't charge

After charging all night when I turn it on it says batteries are low and then shuts off right away

  • 3 more comments
  • flipperson Jan 20, 2009

I have it plugged in all day, with my Mac powered on and it still won't charge.

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2009

When I received it the battery was at about 60%. It won't charge past that point.

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2009

Same problem with brand new Flip.

  • Lizzy Leigh Mar 21, 2009

It was working just fine, and then I left it on the desk for a day. The next morning, it wouldn't turn on, so I assumed it was out of charge. I plugged it into the computer, but it didn't charge. And when I pull up the flipshare window, it doesn't even register that the camera is plugged in.

  • Lizzy Leigh May 11, 2010

No, it doesn't take batteries. It has a rechargable battery that plugs into the USB. The instructions say to never change the battery.

If you look on the bottom of the camera there is a button that slides from a locked to an unlocked position. Slide it to unlocked and then slide down the back of the camera (the side with the lens) there is a removeable rechargeable battery pack. Remove it for a moment and then put it back in. Try plugging back into the USB port. This should work.

My camera does not have "a button" that slides from a locked to an unlocked position. I have the white CISCO flip slide video camcorder. Does not work after 8 hours on charger (both wall charger and my computer). Front does not slide to expose battery. Can't figure out how to remove the built-in battery.

In case this helps, here is transcript of a 'chat' with FLIP support.

    Chat Messages:

Marie Nessa N. (29755) has joined this session.
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
Hello Kirke Godfrey! Thank you for contacting Flip Video Support. How may I help you?
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
hi there, Just a quick Question. The Flip seems to not hold a charge for for long even when not used. If i charge the camera fully then switch off and not use for 12 hours, when i switch the camera on again the battery shows LOW charge
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
    I see.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    any thoughts?
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
There's a possibility that the battery was fully drained before you tried to charge it that's why it's no longer holding a charge.
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
But we still have to further isolate the problem so that we'll know exactly what steps to do to fix it.
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
By the way, have you contacted Flip Live Chat Support before with the same matter?
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    first report
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
May I know which country you're based in and can I have the Serial Number of your Flip Camcorder so I can provide you the correct recommendation?
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    Australia
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
Where do i read the Serial # please
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
Below the barcode inside the battery compartment.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    #############
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
    Thanks! :-)
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
Please remove the battery pack for 10 seconds, put it back after 10 seconds and press the Power button for another 10 seconds.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    ok doing now
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    will this WIPE the Camera>?
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
    No.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    ok :)
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
Next, please connect the USB arm to a high-powered USB port on your computer, and ensure your computer is powered on. You may see no activity on the camcorder – neither lights nor indication that the camcorder is charging – for the first 30 minutes. Once the initial 30 minutes has concluded, you should see some indication that the camcorder is charging and be able to power the camcorder on. Continue charging for the full amount of time (we suggest six hours) to ensure that the battery is completely charged before recording again.
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
If after 30 minutes, you continue to see no activity on the camcorder, please leave it connected to your computer overnight, but ensure that the computer does not hibernate nor power off during the entire charging period.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
ok I'll try this and see how it goes
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
so you think its a Power Manager issue?
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
Yes,Kirke. Please note that the USB port on the keyboards of Macintosh computers does not have sufficient power to charge Flip camcorders.
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
If still not holding a charge, we would like you to try to reset the power mode on your Flip Ultra to see if we can resolve the issue. Please leave the batteries out of your camcorder for 48-72 hours to drain any residuals from the camcorder. Insert brand new batteries in the device.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
how about a Kensington Powered Hub?
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    sorry BELKIN
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
the flip CHARGE symbol comes on when i had it plugged to my Mac keyboard
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
You can follow these steps to check if you have a high-powered USB port 2.0:
    1. Connect your camcorder to your computer
    2. Right click on “My Computer”
    3. Select “Properties”
    4. Select the “Hardware” tab
    5. Click on “Device Manager”
    6. Under “Serial Bus Controllers”, look for an entry that reads “Enhanced"
Note: If you have Enhanced listed, it means to say that you have a high-powered USB port 2.0.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    Ok I'll check that
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
It seems weird that the camera displays the CHARGING symbol even if its not getting enough power
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
It will still charge on a MAC, it's just that the USB port on the keyboards of Macintosh computer.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
thats the one i mean, even when connected to the little side port n the keyboard, the Flip displays the charge symbol. But i will use a diff Port for this Rested process
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
It'll still display charging but it doesn't mean that it's getting enough power.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    wow
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
So I suggest to connect the plug in the camcorder to a high-powere USB port 2.0.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
how annoying. makes it hard to know what connections to use
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    i'll dothat for sure
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
just makes it hard to know whats happening when one is traveling and using other computers etc to charge it
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
is there any chance that the Firmware will be updated to give users better information about the power state of the camera?
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
    No Kirke.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    :(
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
I am sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you.
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:
    oh well
from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:
Do you have any other Flip products that I can help you with?
from Kirke Godfrey to All Participants:

from Marie Nessa N. (29755) to All Participants:

Thanks! This solved my problem. I was plugging my Flip Slide into the USB drive on my laptop, but that doesn't have enough juice to power it. However, when I plugged it into my Mac Desktop at work it charged the whole thing. Of course, I did have to leave it plugged in for about half an hour before the computer even registered the device since it was so low on battery.

I had the same issue.. Even with the Flip Mino HD, there is a battery pack. Slide down the cover on the front under the lens and remove and reinsert the battery pack. It fixed my problem. I guess it just wasn't making good contact?

OK, this is my experience after borrowing a Flip HD. Number 1, take out the battery pack and check that the white plastic shrink wrap that holds the two AA rechargeable batteries together does not obstruct the charging terminals. If it does, as was the case with mine, using a craft knife or similar carefully cut away the plastic to reveal the terminals. Reinsert. If this does not help. Number 2, hold down the on/off button and then try holding down the big red button for 7 to 10 secs, or the on/off button and the Trash button for 7 to 10 secs. One of these key combinations reset my Flip HD and the USB connected symbol changed to the battery charging symbol. Hope this helps.

My issue was fixed the same as neil 721552. I took the battery pack out a cut away the plastic form the bottom of the battery pack. Now when I plug it in it takes about 15-20 seconds to start charging but it does charge. I plugged it into my little mini ipod charger (little white block looking thing) and it seems to be good now. For the first time I see the little charge symbol on the screen over the battery symbol. Just in case anybody asking mine is a Flip HD 2hr record time.

I have the Flip Slide HD. I have a solution. Here's my situation:

On my Flip, you cannot access the battery so you can't take it out. Good thing too because its not necessary. Even thought you "think" you've tried this, try it again.

Symptoms: You try to power of the Flip. It may/may not beep, flash the Flip logo on the screen, say "Low Battery" and power off.

The fix:

1. Get a small paper clip or something similar to poke inside the "reset button" hole.
2. On the bottom of the Flip, inside the tripod mount hold, there is a tiny hole. With the paper clip (or object), press the little reset button in AND HOLD IT for 10 seconds (I did 20 to be on the safe side).
3. Release the button. Nothing happens, right? Right. Now connect it to a USB 2.0 port (most laptops have it these days).
4. At first, the computer will not acknowledge that anything has happened. The Flip will do nothing either. But turn on the TV and wait for about 5 min or less and VIOLA! You hear the charging beep sound, the computer will finally see it and the charging icon will display on the Flip.

Let it charge for 3 to 4 hours.

YOU'RE WELCOME!!!

Bought a new Flip HD and the rechargeable battery pack supplied was dead. Plugged into USB as per instruction to charge, left it six hours, came back "check battery pack"!
removed and re-checked supplied rechargeable battery pack, left ANOTHER six hours. Same thing.
Solution; Send it back under its very limited warranty before it is too late and choose another brand. It seems all many people are getting the same problem with supplied battery pack recharging issues and the flip website list many potential issues...and life is too short for this hassle with a brand new product.

I have a Flip Slide HD camera , you cannot remove the battery pack as it is sealed within the case. I can only charge the thing half way. It is only a year and a half old and used once! I am not impressed with this product and will never recommend it to anyone!

You don't charge the camera on the computer. You put in new batteries.

  • arkcca Dec 25, 2010

WOW GUYS. He's talking about the flip slide HD not the original flip. The new flip slide has to be charged with a usb port, try plugging it into your computer and running itunes all night. Worked for me. It seems as if the computer has to be active when its charging.

For those writing to replace batteries you have an OLD version of the Flip. The Flip Mino HD has a USB re-chargable battery so your solution will not work here. I have the same problem. I let it charge for hours and I can't even turn on my Flip & the Flip for Mac software isn't recognize it anymore when plugged in. I have had this flip for over a year. My old Flip with double A batteries still works like a charm!

I have a charger for my Kindle that's a little hunk of plastic with a USB port on it that plugs into an AC socket. A cable plugs into it that has a mini-HDMI plug on the other end that charges both my Kindle and my Driod. Plug the Flip USB connector right into the Kindle USB charger. It has enough current to get a dead battery going again.

It says that the battrie is to low and i have charged it all night and three hours today

If the cell phone battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

Have a new Ultra HD Flip Video. How do I know when it is fully charged? Does the red light go off or what?

Hello there,

The Flip Ultra should have a rechargeable AA battery pack.

To verify it is charging, the battery icon will be flashing lightning bolt. The red light goes from red to green the moment it is fully charged. It takes six hours before it gets a full charge via the USB.

Please let me know if this gave you enough information. Thank you for using FixYa.

Flip ultra hd not charging

I had the same problem, but it seemed to be a bit more sporadic. I'd occasionally get the "Charging Paused - Check Battery Pack" error. The battery pack itself looks a bit strange, since the white plastic covers the bottom, right side and it seems that there is no possible way for the battery to make contact with the camera. However, I saw the following suggestion on another site (which the poster claimed came from Flip technical support), and this technique worked for me:

1) remove the battery pack from the camcorder
2) connect the camcorder to a powered USB port on your computer
3) when the "Connected" indicator comes on, insert the battery pack into the camcorder
4) safe eject your camcorder from your computer
5) reconnect your camcorder to your computer
6) the battery pack should now begin to charge within the camcorder

Flip Mino won't turn on!

I had the same problem. Here are the steps I took to fix it.

1. Adjust the power options on your laptop to ensure it does not sleep/hiberate ever.
2. Reset the camcorder by inserting a paperclip into the hole in the tripod mount. Hold the paperclip in there for about seven seconds.
3. Then immediately plug the flip into the cpu.
4. You may not see anything besides the little blinking white light on the USB arm for a while (about 30 minutes maybe) but leave it in.
5. Eventually it should spring to life and show the recharging battery on the little screen (the Flip Share program may start too.)
6. Leave it charging until the little white light stops flashing - full charge about 3 hours.
7. You can then remove the flip and change the power settings back to normal.

My flip video camera froze.it wont turn on....

Have you tried resetting the camera? Hold down the power button and the red button simultaneously until the camera shuts off (takes about 10 seconds). Then, just press the power button again and the camera should turn back on. I had the same problem; when I pressed the red button to stop recording, the camera froze, and the red light remained on. I tried resetting it like this, and it seemed to work.
