In order to use an old HDD as an external backup with the USB connector I bought it says I need to set the jumper so it's a master. the disk is a maxtor model 83840A6, 7443 cyl, 16 head, 63 sector, s/nC60353KA
Take a look here for the jumper settings

Great, thanks.
The drive is probably not formatted. Go into the disk manager (not too sure what that is on vista) right click on my computer select manage then select disk manager.
The disk will show up as unpartitioned or unformatted (or both) or it may just show up with no drive letter. Right click on it then partition it (use the biggest size it will let you) and format it (use ntfs) then set a drive letter (if it does not do it automatically).
You should then be working
Does your external adaptor supply power to the drive?
Sounds like it has had it. Â Where are you?
Bummer, If you were near London I may have been able to help you

I hooked the hdd up, I got a message saying the device driver was installed but it doesn't show up on 'my computer'. Went to device manager and it was there and "working properly". Any ideas ? (I'm using VISTA if that makes a difference)
it was definitely formatted - I took it out of my old computer and I was trying to access the info on it. I think I made a mistake in my email to you. I did get the "driver installed" message when I hooked it up but I didn't specifically see a Maxtor when I looked at the disk drives in the device manager. I have 2 old HDD's. I just noticed that the one I wrote you about makes no sound when I hook it up. The other one (a Maxtor 6 E040L0) does make the "whirring" sound AND it shows up as a Maxtor 6 E040L0 in device manager. However, it doesn't show up on 'my computer' . When I right click on it in device manager then click on 'properties' it gives the name of the drive and the message "this device is working properly". Once again, this came out of an old computer so I assume the info is still there. I guess I have to assume the other one ( the model 83840A6) is dead, no ?
