My Amana side by side started warming up in the refrigerator compartment but was staying cold in freezer. It has three blower vents in the refrigerator (one in back and two in front that blow into the door compartments). I could not feel any air coming from any of these. I cleaned the coils underneath, unpluged it and let it defrost. after about five hours, I plugged it back in and it seemed to work great. I could feel the cold air blowing into the refrigerator compartment. It worked well for almost 24 hours. I then noticed the problem came back. I am pretty handy but have never worked on an appliance before. I think it may have a problem defrosting automatically but, I don't know what part would need to be replaced or where to find it. Please Help.
If the fan is still working (and it sounds like it is, then the evap coils are frozen up. A typical failure is the defrost bi-metal t-stat but I've also seen LOTS of the adaptive defrost circuit boards fail on this model. I would lean toward the circuit board first as the culprit. Thank you, I'm sure it is the defrost system but, how do I check each part so I know what to replace? I have a tester and I'll be able to check the resistance of the heater coil (what should it read?) but how do I check the t-stat and the circuit board? Where do you reccomend I purchase the part from? Thank you again for your advice.
