Hi, you may are having problems with your Remote Controller, try this for the fowlling order:

1?- remove the bateries from the remote controller
2?- turn on the tv with the power button on the tv
3?- wait a little bit, to see if it is mutting itself
4?- if not, your problem may be with the bateries, try new ones
5?- if the tv still mute itself you have a faulty remote controller, buy another one

Look on the remote. Near the bottom.

Try the "Speakers Off" button. Then try the "Source" button. "Source" turns on/off the tape/audio.

find the reset button and reset the unit,in sometimes is behind the face so detach the face.

You need the remote...or a universal remote you can program to the VSX-305 to un-mute it.

The DISPLAY button on the remote will remove the on-screen display, so you either have to order the original remote or look for a universal remote with a "display" button and hope it works.
