If you Google W1700 backlight you can find vendors that supply replacement backlight inverters. They usually run around $90. If you are handy electronically, you can probably repair yours for about $5. The normal fault on the W1700 backlight inverter is either one or two blown fuses and one or two faulty electrolytic capacitors. These are the tublar looking devices about an inch long and about diameter of a ballpoint pen. When these fail, the top of the unit will bulge out where the case has ruptured to allow gasses to escape. You can get replacement capacitors at Radio Shack, There is a translated narative with pictures describing the removal and replacement of the inverter assembly on line at: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fangelitodiaz.blogspot.com%2F2007%2F10%2Fmonitor-dell-w1700.html&lp=es_en It does not describe the actual replacement of the capacitors, just remember to orient the replacement capacitors properly. One side of the capacitor will be marked with a stripe and - - - signs. One hole on the board will be marked +. Be certain that you DO NOT mount the capacitor with the - marking in the + marked hole. Also don't forget to check and replace the fuses if necessary.
