Configuring a 3COM 3CRWDR200A-75 router as a repeater

I have a 3COM 3CRWDR200A wireless router which I'd like to configure as a repeater for my existing Wireless home network (based on a different router). My purpose is to use it in areas in my house where the wireless reception is low. How do I configure the 3com router to do this? Thanks.

SETTING A ROUTER AS A REPEATER 1. Connect your computer to the repeater router's RJ45 port with a LAN cable. 2. Open a browser, then enter the router's URL configuration's IP address, This is usually something similar to 192.168.0.1 3. Enter the configuration user name and password. The router will display the various router settings. 4. Go to the page that changes the IP address of the router. Changed the IP address so that it is not the same as the main router on the network, or any other network devices. If the main router on the network is set to 192.168.1.1 then the repeater router should use a higher number (ie. 10), such as 192.168.1.10 or higher, depending on how many devices are on your network. 5. Disable the repeater router's DHCP server. This setting should be on the same page as the IP address, (this may be different depending on the make of the router). When the main router is operating normally, this server assigns an IP address to every device that is connected to your network. Because this router is used as a repeater, the main router on your network will still issue the IP addresses. 6. Also turn off the DNS server, if it is activated. This function will be taken over by the main router. 7. Disable any firewall settings on the repeater router. This is usually in the "Security" section, depending on the make and model of your router. 8. Remove all in the "Port Forwarding" section. Some routers may refer to this as "Applications and Gaming," and it allows less-restricted access to the internet. 9. Set the operating mode switch to "Gateway" or "Switch" if applicable. Also, if the repeater router is a wireless router then disable the wireless access or set it to access point only. 10. Save the settings for each page, and reboot the router. When the router boots up, the changes will allow it to act as a simple repeater. 11. Now, place the repeater router in a new location and connect both routers with a Ethernet cable in each of the router's RJ45 LAN ports, and power it up both routers.

Hi Chris, thank you very much for your answer. You explained how to set up my 3com router as a repeater which is connected by Ethernet cable to the main router. What I need is a wireless (WiFi) repeater that is connected to the main router by Wifi and extends the reach of my existing WiFi network (based on the main router) to parts of my house that the main router reaches with low signal strength. Can you please instruct me how to configure this 3com router to do that?

Dont save configuration

Some routers when saving the configuration require you to stay on the page after clicking save, if you close or go to another page to quickly it stop the configuration save, stay on the same page after clicking save until the page refreshes.
Also make sure you are hardwired into the router not wireless, most newer routers do not allow access to the configuration using wireless and some allow you to see but not change the configuration wirelessly.

Ugrade 3com router 3CRWDR200A-75

The first thing I would check would be in the configuration (point your web browser to 192.168.1.1 when you have a wired connection) panel, under:
Wireless settings > configuration

If the 'Wireless mode' is set to 'SuperG', this may be your problem. The SuperG setting will only work with SuperG enabled wireless adapters. First change this setting to 'Mixed 11b/11g'; if it still doesn't work switch down to '11g' then to '11b'.

Do all your wireless testing with a laptop or PC as close to the router as possible - same room at the very least.

If all other settings are correct (double check them), this is the only thing I can think of that can instantly make a difference.

If you feel the firmware may be faiilty, note that although 3.0.1 is the 'newest' on the 3com website, even in their own knowledge base they refer to newer versions. These newer versions are available at:
http://3crwdr.googlepages.com/

You could try using one of these (at your own risk), if you feel it is the firmware itself that is causing the fault.
