Normal does not have enough minerals to conduct electricity very well, and thus a bit of bicarbonate soda in would facilitate the flow of electricity to make the humidifier work. A pinch of baking soda in the water would make it work.
What model? Their website has manual for most models. Search for you model, then click on the "Package Information" tab on that model's product page. E.g.:
TRY POURING IN SOME WHITE DISTILLED VINEGAR AND RUNNING IT. THE VINEGAR LOOSEN UP ANY SCALE AND JUNK. AFTER RUNNING UNIT FOR AWHILE, DRAIN OUT ANY REMAINING LIQUID AND ADD DISTILLED WATER OR FILTERED WATER. RUN UNIT AGAIN. THEN DRAIN OUT ANY LIQUID. NOW THE UNIT SHOULD WORK AS NORMAL. IN THE FUTURE, TRY USING DISTILLED WATER OR FILTERED WATER.
