This needs looking at asap. It can be the wrong oil, blocked or restricted oil passages. Wrong oil filter, bad sensor or simply a bad gauge. Check with an external pressure gauge

1996 GMC Jimmy. I had the oil pressure sending unit replaced by a mechanic. The oil pressure gauge is still pinned on max. Lost now.

have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge to determine the exact pressure reading. It may be a stuck pressure relief valve in the pump (gauge correct) or a faulty gauge ( sender unit correct)

No oil pressure at gauge

first make sure the wire is connected to the sensor :)short the wire to the ground and gauge will show max
if no oil pressure the engine will make noise. If no ticking noise open the filler cap and you will see oil splashing on rocker arms( pressure is OK) if no oil on rocker arm inspect the oil pan for damage.Remove the oil pan and measure clearance from oil pan and strainer(min.1/4 in.)

My oil pressure just jumped to the max reading on the gauge. can this hurt my motor if it is really high oil pressure.

Does the oil pressure go to max or some where in between when you turn on the key without starting? This is what happen to me it was the oil sensor down by the oil filter. The cost for the sensor is about $100.00.

Oil pressure gauge high 1987 chevrolet blazer 350 5.7 liter

YOur best bet on a truck that old is to install a mechanical oil pressure gauge. They are available at any auto parts store or even Target or Walmart. Just buy the kit and follow the instructions. Mounting and routing the oil line is the hardest part.
It would be very unusual for the oil pressure to be maxed high in a 350 that is over 20 years old so i have to think the issue is the guage.

Oil gauge maxes out whin key is turn to on but before engine is started, when started gauge stays in the max out postion. what might the problem be?thank you

The oil pressure sensor has failed. Check to see if the wire has not been knocked off when the oil filter was changed. I think the sensor is either by the oil filter or at the rear top of the engine where the trans bolts up. If the wire is good and connected have the sensor replaced.
