I am running Wondows XP Professional with all the latest updates (including SP3). I recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows. Since then my computer does not recognise either of my card readers. I have a Microdia Flashmover 3 in 1 reader and a SanDisk ImageMate 5-in-1 reader. The Microdia does not have an installation disk. The Sandisk one is not supposed to need one for XP. When I plug them in, the device connecting sound occurs, and the do appear on the device list for devices to remove but they are listed as generic USB devices. They dont however appear in the Drives list on My Computer. Its not the USB ports as other devices work fine in the ports. I dont think its the devices either as at least the Microdia worked before the format and works on my brothers laptop (I havent installed the SanDisk one elsewhere). I've also noticed that if I connect either of the card readers to the PC before I start it up, the computer freezes on the motherboard (MSI P31 Neo) screen before it even gets to Windows.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Did not reinstall the needed drivers. Download drivers from manufacturer support and install them.
Maybe just maybe you can use device manager to install the drivers by searching the web for them. Only take a minute to make the attempt.

Make sure that the Generic USB Device is in the safely remove hardware dialogue then try to install.. or the problem may lie in the face that your usb in not compatible with that specific card...

I bought one years ago for a different computer. Seemed slow. Got a new computer and put it away. Pulled it out to try and realized it is slower than the $1 free shipping usb card readers from china. Meritline.com has great prices/deals. They take forever, but try one for a buck or two, and compare the difference. It may be all you need. If it works, buy one each time there is a sale for under a dollar with free shipping. They won't last forever, and if you keep a new one in the pipeline of shipping, you will be able to always have a working and backup pocket drive that I have found is much faster than this sandisk imagemate which has gone back to storage.
