Probably a loose hotshoe. This is a common problem with the D700 hotshoe and SB900 combo. The weight of the SB900 eventually loosens the hotshoe, meaning the internal screws holding the hotshoe in place loosens.

SOURCE: My Nikon D700 fires my SB900 flash uncontrollably.

This may be due to something loose or internal damage in the camera's printed circuit. Also this can be due to settings. Try to go to the menus and reset all to factory default. Later you can pick the settings you want, if it works.

Is it possible to disassemble a nikon d700 hotshoe

Don't attempt to repair your camera if you are not trained. Cameras have many interlocking parts and you may not be able to reassemble everything because it is not always a matter of simply doing things in reverse order. The repair bill will be lower if you don't tamper with it yourself. Contact 1-800-Nikon-US (1-800-645-6687) 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday for assistance.

My NIkon SB600 is stuck on my hotshoe-I can not remove it fromt the camera (d80) help

I had a similar problem with my SB25 when I tried to use it on a D90. I took the camera into the Nikon USA Repair Depot in Los Angeles where they took it into the back shop and removed it while I waited without charge. If the SB600 is like my SB700 and SB900's, there is a spring loaded dimple in the camera's hot shoe that clicks into a hole in the SB flash hot shoe. I think if you can slide a thin piece of metal such as a machinists shim, you may be able to depress the dimple and release the SB600. Let me know if it works.

Increaseing sshutter speed when using flash

Michael,
Make sure of the compatibility of the flash unit and the camera body, The D2X is a pro camera that came out in 2005 and it was the flagship for DSLR's at the time, the camera should very well sync to the flash as long as the camera and flash can communicate. There shouldn't be an issue with a newer Nikon flash unit unless there was a change in the hotshoe connection, bring both in to a reputable camera shop and compare the hotshoe with a newer Nikon.

Nikon D70s will not shoot

Make sure the hotshoe is clean, this will give the hotshoe a better connection. Make sure you lock the speedlight into place.
