Try taking out the ink cartdridge and looking at the contacts where the ink cartdridge meets te cradle, sometimes ink gunks up on the carasel and allthough you change it out, the gunk stays there and just block the new one put in. wear latex gloves when doing this, Black ink is pesky on the skin.

Also, just might want to check the printer settings and be sure it isnt set to print in greyscale.

I had the same problem. Ended up replacing the black/yellow "printhead" and that corrected the problem.

SOURCE: How do I clean the print heads on my Photosmart

You can get a download of the manual from HP:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=emea_africa&lang=en&product=57595&

The self-clean cycle of the cartridges can be accessed from the LCD or the software on your computer.

To manually cleaning the cartridges:
Remove the cartridge from the printer. Dip a cotton swab in distilled water and squeeze out any excess water. While holding the cartridge by its top, wipe off the face and edges of the cartridge. Do not wipe the nozzle plate (that could damage the cartridge). Replace the cartridge in the printer. Please note: if the cartridge is out of the printer for more than 30 minutes, the ink could start to dry out and not be usable.

The print heads are part of the cartridge.

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: HP Photosmart 8250 is printing

Hi,

Please follow the below mentioned steps.

Step 1: Check the ink cartridges HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink. If the ink cartridges have been refilled, try replacing them with genuine HP ink cartridges. Step 2: Check ink levels If the print defect is minor, it might be caused by reserve mode operation. When the printer runs out of some colors, it can continue printing using remaining inks, but print quality may be affected. If cyan, magenta, or yellow is out, the printer can print only in grayscale. Replace any empty print cartridges. To check ink levels, examine the ink drop icons on the color graphics display. c00368083.jpg

  • Each icon corresponds to the cartridge that is the color of the icon. The icons are also in the same order, from left to right, as the cartridges in the printer.
  • If an icon is empty, you may need to replace the corresponding cartridge soon.
  • The printer cannot read ink levels in non-HP, refilled, and remanufactured cartridges. A question mark instead of an icon displays for these cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink. Printer service or repairs required as a result of printer failure or damage attributable to the use of non-HP ink will not be covered under warranty.
For a larger display of ink levels, click the Right Select Photos arrow. c00368084.gif 1 - Right Select Photos arrow The ink levels display in larger format, with the icons corresponding to each cartridge. Figure 1: Ink levelsc00368085.gif Step 3: Calibrate color If the cartridges have not been refilled and none are empty, try calibrating the color.
  1. Open the printer Toolbox :
    1. Open HP Solution Center (click Start , then All Programs , then HP , then HP Solution Center ).
    2. If you have more than one printer installed, make sure to select the correct printer tab in HP Solution Center .
    3. Click Settings .
    4. Click Print Settings .
    5. Click Printer Toolbox .
  2. On the Device Services tab, click Calibrate Color , then follow the onscreen instructions. The procedure takes about two minutes and requires two sheets of paper.
Step 4: Clean the printhead If the steps above have not help, clean the printhead.
  1. Open the All-in-One Toolbox :
    1. Open HP Solution Center (click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center ).
    2. If you have more than one All-in-One installed, make sure to select the correct All-in-One tab in HP Solution Center .
    3. Click Settings .
    4. Click Print Settings .
    5. Click Printer Toolbox .
  2. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Print Cartridges , and then follow the onscreen instructions. Three levels of cleaning are available.
Step 5: Service the product If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product. Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

Black printer ink in HP Photosmart may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head.

The black ink cartridge is larger than the photo black cartridge and black is used in photos to make the darker colors. Black text takes much less ink per page.

HP Deskjet 990cxi Printer NOT printing B/W, only red.

To customer of HP deskjet 990cki: I purchased the HP photosmart Plus B209 ~ January 2010. 3 months into, I have learned that when the color ink that you don't use evaporates, the black ink will not work at all, no matter what you adjust or clean. To make it work you have to purchase more color ink...on & on & on..$$$$. Neither HP nor Best Buy will refund my investment. Spoken with HP customer service reps. in the Philippines & Canada both being outside of the US. NO customer satisfaction. No refunds. I suggest Boycotting both corps.

HP Photosmart 3210xi - some colors (magentas) will not print

Remove the magenta cartridge, and try cleaning the head with alcohol, maybe with a small paint brush or an acid brush. It sounds like ink has dried and plugged up that head.

Hp 6150 won't print clearly --new cartridges are in

Clean the print head if you suspect that the nozzles might be clogged. Cleaning the print head consumes ink, so perform print head cleaning only when necessary.

Hope this initial info/idea helps.
