Posted on Jan 06, 2009

I've got a 3580 Ultrium tape drive with a tape that won't eject and the unit displays error code 6. Is there a trick to get the tape out?

I had this same problem a few mins ago. I held the tape up with my finger as I hit eject. The tape came right out. Then I put in a cleaning tape and had no issues at all. You don't need to disassemble the unit at all.

Had exactly the same issue. Error code 6. Tried the manual eject and NetVault Unload tape but not luck. Came across this answer and it worked as above. Ran cleaning tape through and that ejected as normal. Saves no end of time on phone to support... :)

Its gonna be complicated if you have no tape drive repair skill. It require you to remove the drive from the external unit and also remove the top cover before you can start removing the drives.

IBM 3580 Lto3 drive showing in Device manager but not showing in ntbackup while taking bkp

I am guessing you don,t have a driver installed for this device.
Just manually add the driver but look for LTO as the MANUFACTURER - there is a generic driver in there which should work fine.
Better still, also upgrade your backup program - even to an old copy of backup exec. It has proper cataloguing and also its own driver family too.

Tape cannot eject

This is usually because it is in use still. If you cannot see anything still trying to access the drive (backup software for eaxmple) you could try powering down the tape unit and rebooting the machine that it is plugged into the turn the tape unit back on and see if it will now eject.

Thanks

Stuck tape

The tape won't come out when resetting the drive. Error 6 is serious.
To get out the tape you must open the drive. But IBM has a discription online (and in the user manual) how you can do this.

Error on IBM 3581 tape library.

Error 5 states that there is a problem with the drive and not the library, either the tape path or read/write head. Replaced drive - works fine

Tape drive does not recognize or eject tape

Yeah the Ultrium 4 tape drives only r/w to ULT3 and ULT4 tapes.

We put a Ultrium 2 tape in our 4 drive and it seems to be locked permanently.
