Sharp Camcorder VL-NZ100E battery doesn't seem to charge

I've left my battery connected to the Sharp Camcorder VL-NZ100E for a few months and decided to use it again- i forgot to remove the battery from the Camcorder Tried to charge the battery but it doesn't seem to charge-the battery should feel warm after at least 1 hr but it doesn't. The Camcorder can power on with power adapter connected but not with battery How do i confirm if its a battery failure or the charging circuit in the Camcorder is faulty? I can easily buy the battery if its a battery failure.I do not intend to send for repair if its a charging circuit failure. I've tried measuring the two leads in the camcorder which connects to the battery round contacts with the camcorder connected to power adapter to ground and found it to be about 2.7V Does this confirm if the charging circuit is ok? I've tried to clean the battery round contacts and the two leads in the camcorder but the battery still did not seems to charge Appreciate your advise. Thanks

    Hi,
I would like to clarify that the 2.7volts measured was two leads in the camcorder which connects to the battery round contacts (NOT the battery leads itself)-this measurement was made when the power adapter was connected to ensure there is input power

I think you may have mistaken that I took the measurement of the battery leads (obviously 2.7 volts is too low for the battery to operate)-I did actually measured the voltage on the battery leads which read less that 1 volt-looks like battery is flat

Based on the clarification above,do you still reckon its the battery that needs replacement or the charging circuitry of the Camocorder is defective?

    Appreciate your expert advise

    Thanks

2.7 volts is too low. Usually camcorders use battery at least 6 volts. Problems with rechargeables especially NiCds and NiMH, a cell will be shorted. for 6 volts pack, there are 5 cells in series (5 pcs x 1.2 volts with load , 1.35 no load). If you are measuring only 2.7 volts, it is highly possible that 3 cells are dead. As for the charger, if the same charger is used to power the camcorder and you said the the camcorder operates using the adaptor, this means that the charger is OK. You can ZAP the battery back to life but I will not recommend. It can be dangerous. If you can buy the battery, I suggest you do it since the old battery, even when zapped, will not provide enough juice anymore.

Check the battery specs, ie. voltage and current capacity. Measure the battery terminal, this should be close or more that what is indicated.

If the voltage is OK then we are sure that there arte no cell that is dead.

The current capacity cannot be measured eaily using an ammeter (dont eventry to measure the current by directly conneting the current meter to the battery , a blown tester fure or a burned cable can occur)

For the charger, the voltage should be more than the battery level. If the battery is 6 volts, the charger should at least give 7.5 volts.

Because you said that the same charger is used to power the camcorder without the battery, ad you mentioned that it does operates without the battery, then I would say that the charger is OK and the bettery is dead.

By the way, I also own a sharp camcorder, VL-650U and the battery is 6 volts.

I also have sharp VL-NZ100 Digital Viewcam. The power will not come on either using the battery or the AC adapter. What could be the problem?

I have sharp VL E630 the battery is charged I put it in the camcorder the screnn fickered a couple times the went black and now nothing? Allan

Many times the contacts that hold the battery in place become compressed and they no longer make good contact. This results in not only the battery no charging often, but the camera not working. Make sure that the metal tabs are holding the battery securely.

The other possibility is a short. This is much harder to troubleshoot and may require you take the camera in for repair. But if the device has a short, it will shut the camera down.

Battery or Charger bad?

If you persistently leave the batteries discharged, it is unlikely that they will be able to hold a full charge. You should re-charge your batteries at least once a month, even if unused. Put it on your calendar. BTW 2 years old is hardly 'brand new'.
