I've just returned from a trip and while there, I've encountered the error message, unrecognized file format, on the screen from my v550 Kodak camera. I couldn't review the image but the camera continue to take the pictures as normal, I just could not review them.
Getting home I've tried to viewing them but I can't. I don't use the supplied docking station, I just remove the memory card and plop it directly to my PC. The files are there, they are reading as the standard jpeg file, but when I try to open it, I get an message from 'not a valid file'. I've tried using MS paint, Illustrator, photoshop and other image readers.....NO LUCK. I've even have gone as far as uploading them to photobucket and still get an error message. I know the file/picture/jpeg is valid but I just can't seem to open them. SO I really don't want lose these pics so:
1) Can I restore/repair the file with a program?
2) Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so what is the solution for fixing the pictures that were taken?
3) Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Odd set of changing circumstances...truly puzzled by them all. Pictures taken and they showed fine on the camera, downloaded on to the PC and were fine at first, then I got a message saying that the format not understood...checked format all pictures now show as JPC formatnot JPEG... and cannot be read by computer. I checked and the extension on all the picture files is JPC (if I remember correctly....and that stands for Japan Picture ..? Now pictures cannot be opened and may be corrupted beyond opening.
Can this camera not be used in North America with our PCs?
Thought the memory card was at fault...still have the old one... hoping to get the pix off it. Bought a new memory card, took more holiday pictures; seemed fine, and this time we took them to the cruise ship photo lab to have them made into a disc. Pix seemed fine on their computer,vieweed well, but once the disc was made we have half pictures, no pictures, etc.
Took camera to a shop where they installed their memory card into camera and they took a picture....it didn't show up on their memory card AT ALL! Obviously camera not reading to memory card. The odds of two memory cards being faulty is too impossible.

I have "lost" almost 400 pictures that obviously cannot be replaced. They were there, reviewed fine and suddenly my camera "froze." I had to remove the batteries to get the camera to come back on. Then the everything read, unrecognized format.

With a Kodak Z1012 IS I've seen this come and go. Sometimes the camera says the files are unrecognizable, but then when I transfer them using Kodak EasyShare to Mac, they show up fine.
It seems to primarily happen with videos, although I do a lot of both pictures and videos.

when i get those errors on my camera i cant even delete them! no matter how many times i actually try to delete, they show up again the next time i do to view all my images. Images can error for a number of reasons not all of which are understood
Go to www.konvar.com and download PC INSPECTOR
This program will rescue most images if any thing can.
You may get the odd half picture, and if you are luck it may be only one or two dud images blocking access to the remaind
The memory card may have corrupted. You may need to try using recovery software to download your photos. Try the mac links provided in this article. Once you've recovered your photos, and backed them up on your computer, format your memory card in your camera, using your camera's format feature (look for it in the menus).
When videos are spliced, multiple audio and video tracks are needed. Kodak EasyShare digital cameras can handle only one video and one audio track at a time. Use the Apple QuickTime player to view spliced videos.

You do have to download the program, and I think you have to have a memory card reader on your computer, but it recovered most of the pictures that I had lost when my camera listed my pictures as unrecognized file format. I hope this helps.

Honestly, try transferring the images to your computer without using the Easyshare software. This software has been causing some problems for some users. After you have the images on your computer...open them up and then save them as JPEGs. This should help fix the problem with the transferring.
