I've had a kenwood 817dvd for about 3 years and worked great until last night it didn't turn on with the truck. if i press the reset button it will turn on but as soon as i change the source it goes dead after about 1 second. I can't see any grounded wires (brain is under back seat) but it is possible. But it's weird that it will turn on as "standby" mode, i unplugged the speaker rca's thinking maybe it was a speaker shorted because it's seems to cut out when the volume cuts in but it still cut out...any help would be appreciated.
I removed my brain from beneath my seat and exposed all wires and connections. I have found that on mine (kvt-815) there were two pinched wires- 1 for a speaker and the other the remote wire. I respliced these sections and tested my radio again. It appears to be working now and stays on again. I'm guessing one of the wires must have been touching something metal under the seat (seat frame) and grounding out. If the unit doesn't power on at all, check the fuse first. Otherwise, I would inspect every wire like I did and maybe you'll find a pinched (grounded) wire. Maybe I just got lucky... but at least it's working again and I don't have to replace the brain! Hope this helps.

Same thing... I have the kvt-815. Worked fine for so long, shut down to go into a store one night, started car and shut down. Mine will also stay on in stand by after pressing the reset button, but after selecting source, a very quiet high pitched hum can be heard from the speakers, then shuts down as soon as an utter of sound comes out (a couple of seconds after changing the source). Love the radio and has been good to me, but not looking forward to buying a replacement brain right now.
