How to replace battery for PHV1800 type 1 18vdc

If you are handy with a soldering iron, and don't mind spending a few hours building a new battery pack using 1.2 volt "sub c" cells, you can disassemble the PHV1800, and rebuild the pack yourself. I just did it tonight, and the vacuum works like new.

However, I'm not going to do this again. The PHV1800 doesn't use a single battery pack, but 2 packs that have to be assembled with very little room for error. You can purchase a combination battery pack/motor assembly for $75 (US currency, price currect as of 10/2011), unscrew the screws that hold the vacuum together, and replace the battery/motor unit as one.

How can I service my kerby vacuum myself

remove the case screws from the cover and take off outer shell, then take to someone with an air compressor and gently blow out any dirt, then with a can of light weight weight oil lube any places that rotate, check your belt and wires for connections and replace outer cover and you should be set

Replace my fan on my kerby

I had to replace mine fan yesterday. I broke away some of the outer pieces and grabbed the fan around the center with some vise grips and put another vise grip on the shaft. ( You can also put a hard steel tool of some kind through the hole in the shaft) when facing the front from the attachment side the shaft unscrews when turning it clockwise. It comes apart right in front of the fan where the washer is.

Just purchased a used unit.

1. Did I get a good price? - YES
2. What would be considered "regular" maintenance on these units?
Replace belts every 1-1.5 years (they stretch over time), make sure brush roll bristles are not worn and stick out of the nozzle by about 1/8 of the inch (more info here). If bags starts stinking - wash it (more info HERE). Keep it clean and store unit with the nozzle raised off the floor (so bristles would not bend)
Other than that - nothing else is really important.

3. Are there any "Normal Problems" that I should be aware of?
If it makes strange crackling sound when you push it while it is OFF and in NEUTRAL - it may need new bracket cam (instructions HERE). Be careful - do not DROP it on the floor. Original G4 nozzle hooks (that hold nozzle to the unit) are britle and may break. STOP using it if it starts to work LOUD ( fan probably is broken)

4. Any advice for a new used Kerby G4 owner?
Go through the manual - ESPECIALLY section where brush roll installation is explained. We have some good pictures that you may find a bit better than in the OEM manual HERE.

Enjoy,
Rocky

Hair around wheels

No. I have 3 women and 2 dogs under my roof and have the same problem. My wife uses a Eureka vacuum that cost $140.00 and it seems to handle this better than our old Kerby.

We take a broom and swiffer and collect what hair we can from the bathroom areas, etc, before sweeping to avoid this problem.
