Kenmore Standup Deep Freezer thaws randomly and doesn't freeze food on bottom

Deep freezer will often keep ice on the top shelf but only keep meet softly frozen. Will not keep any sort of frozen convenience food most of the time. Then it will randomly defrost and stay that way until the food and ice inside is ruined. It sits in the garage but we live in a moderately temperate climate.

Replace the defrost on the unit. You will need to remove the contents and then take out the back wall to access the thermostat. Here is the part to order. http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/clic...

Thank you so much! Do you know if keeping the freezer in the garage is a problem? It isn't climate controlled.

  • Richard Roth
    Richard Roth Nov 05, 2012

No, the unit may run longer during the warmer months but that is about all.

  • Anonymous Nov 08, 2012

We ordered the part, hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks!

Just an update, the part came in and my husband put it on. So far so great! It's freezing and holding steady like it did when it was new. Thank you so much for the solution.

SOURCE: ice on back wall but not freezing food and rattle noise. Moved all food to other freezer

This is a fairly common problem with these types of refrigerators. The design is set to defrost every 12 hours and be down for 1 hour to allow ice to melt on coils. More often than not the ice never fully melts and creates a blockage in the coils and in turn slows air flow. You can remove the screws in the back wall of freezer unit and unsnap the ice maker plug to allow access to the coil. Gently tilt the back plate forward. You can then unplug the ref. and help it thaw with a blow drier. If you are not comfortable removing the back plate then you can just unplug the ref. and let it thaw on its own. this may take a while. try to remove as much ice as you can from the back of the freezer wall by hand and prop the door open for a couple of hours to ensure that all the ice melts. The rattling sound you are hearing is the fan blades hitting the ice that is built up around it. As a precaution I recommend that these type of refrigerators get manual defrost simply by unplugging about once a month for about two (2) hours. I hope that this will help you out with the melted ice cream. Good luck.

SOURCE: Whirlpool gladiator garage freezer/refrigerator (top)

Remove the back liner and wall (more details on this below if you need them) to expose the iced up drain line (only 1) on the right side center inside the aluminum drain pan (Directly behind the bottom right side vent that goes into the freezer compartment). Thaw it out so that it will allow water to drain off (slow way -turn off unit for hours, not quite so slow - spoon in hot water - use towels to keep as much of the water from running into the lower freezer) When the drain is clear and water is draining freely, take light qauge copper wire (t-stat or low volt) and feed it down the drain approx 3 - 4 feet and then wrap the end of it tightly around the heavy defrost bar located just above the the drain hole (this bar resembles an oven element or dishwasher heater element and circles the entire freezer coil). Put several tight wraps on it. This will transfer some of the heat from the defrost cycle down into the drain line and hopefully solve your problem. If the coils are totally iced up you may have a defrost cycle problem and if so this solution won't work) reinstall all liners and wiring and you're done
removing the back wall (if you are unsure) take of plate located at upper left side of the back wall (2 short screws) to expose the wire harness- separate the main connectors) remove the 6 fasteners attaching the back metal liner wall (4 long & 2 short - the short ones go to outside lower holes) . and remove the bottom plastic liner tray (just lifts out) and the short plastic base wall at the back bottom of the compartment ( it may be iced in and hard to remove- be careful) remove the stryofoam insulating liner. Again it may be iced in and frozen to the unit so be careful and if necessary use warm water to thaw it out. This will expose the inner liner wall and the lower drain pan and line. If you see that the bottom of the coils are iced up you may want to remove the inner liner and defrost the coils but this it not usually the case and you can leave it in place. Again, if the coils are totally iced up you may have a defrost cycle problem and if so this solution won't work)

Imperial commercial upright. Top shelf is icing and frezzing bottom is not freezing.

Hi,

Fan problem is one of the most common reasons for the freezer to start failing, this is called "frost free failure." Ice can build up on the evaporator coils over time, and this ice builds up until it starts blocking the fan. The fan is responsible for circulating cold air throughout the freezer, so if it is blocked the freezer will not be able to freeze any food. You can usually check this by removing an access panel in the back of the freezer to inspect the coils. If ice is built up on the coils, a hairdryer can assist in defrosting them.

It's also possible that the fan is not running at all. If the fan is burned out or the motor isn't running, cold air can't circulate through the freezer and everything will melt. You can normally hear the fan motor switch on and off from time to time. Listen for it and if you can't hear it coming on for an extended period of time, the motor may need repair or replacement. The wires connecting to the fan may be the problem, preventing the fan from receiving electricity.

Several other problems could be keeping your freezer from freezing:

There could be leaks in one or several of the hoses in the refrigerator, which results in the cold air being lost instead of circulating properly throughout the fridge and freezer.

If you have the freezer so full that the cold air can't circulate, your food will thaw even though the freezer isn't malfunctioning. Always leave some space open in the freezer and try to not store food right up against the cooling vents.

The thermostat might have shorted out, which means the freezer can't accurately determine how cold it is. If this is the case, the refrigerator would probably not be working, either.

If your defrost drain becomes clogged, the water in the line will just refreeze over and over again, which could damage the lines as well as the fan. Always check the drain and make sure no sludge is building up in it if you have a self-defrosting refrigerator.

Always try to keep the freezer door closed for long periods of time. The more the door is opened, the more warm air is let in and cold air is released. If the door is opened frequently, the freezer could be warming faster than the fridge can cool it, which will thaw your food.

I hope this helps........

Good luck.

Kenmore bottom freezer keep freezing up.

just called in a sears technician 150 dollar bill that was an easy fix. he says my bottom freezer kenmore fridge with warm fridge problem was due to the pathway being blocked by ice and garbage which is common with these fridges. he took off cover from the fridge bottom and poured boiling water down to the freezer. try that before you replace any parts or call in a tech. next time im getting a top freezer because the blower is on the top not in the middle with the bottom freezers and thus more problem prone.
