My machine was also not sewing in reverse and stuck in a basting stitch. It was a simple fix. Unscrew the plate and remove any pins stuck in there. All fixed

Look at the feed dogs under the foot see if they are raised high enough to pull the material through.

SOURCE: Brother sewing machine will not make continuous stitches

first you should turn off the machine and let in reset it's internal programs. Yes the feed dogs are very important. start your machine again...set the feed dogs...unthread and rethread teh machine from start to finish to include taking out the bobbin and replacing it. then make sure you bobbin winding in completely in Un using mode...

try changing the needle
also check the top thread tension
check for lint under needle plate
some needles & thread aren't compatable--try this
Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

I have a Brother XL 3500 what do I set the dials on for a basting stitch

What is the stitch length for a basting stitch?

Basting a Seam for Fitting:

At the sewing machine, set the stitch length to 5mm. This will make it easy to remove any unwanted stitches. Sew the seam at the desired seam allowance. After fitting and the adjustments have been made, sew the seam with a normal stitch length of 2.4mm.

How do you machine baste on a brother PE 830DL I am wanting to embroider on stretch material and I was told to float the stretch material and baste it to the tear away in the hoop thanks

A basting stitch is just a matter of setting the stitch length to very long. If you want to remove the basting stitch after your project is complete, you can also loosen the top tension so the bobbin thread will pull out very easily.

Wondering if a wash-away fabric spray adhesive will work just as well.

There doesn't seem to be a stitch long enough on machine for basteing so I can gather material?

Try loosening both top and bottom tension. while longer stitches are easier, it can be done on shorter stitches as well. A bennifit to shorter stitches is the gathers will be smaller and easier to work with! Remember to reset the bobbin tension before sewing again.
