These days, laptop computers, like the Toshiba A305, are designed so that many of the components can be removed and replaced.

This includes the keyboard, which can be removed even if it becomes broken or damaged. This is good because it means you don't need to toss out the whole computer, but you may be worried about how to do it if you don't know much about computers.

The good news is that the process is fairly straightforward.

Turn off your Toshiba laptop and remove the power cable if it is attached.

Close the screen and turn your computer upside down.

Slide the rectangular battery out of its compartment on the underside of the computer.

Turn the keyboard right-side up and open the screen so you have full access to the keyboard. Locate the rectangular plastic frame just above the keyboard.

Insert the top of your screwdriver in the seam at the end of the frame where it meets the side of the computer, and gently pry the frame up.

Remove it from the computer.

Remove the two screws above the keyboard and set them aside.

Lift the keyboard up and unplug the thick ribbon cable where it connects at the back of the keyboard. Set the old keyboard aside.

Plug the cable into the port in the back of the new keyboard and fit the keyboard over the computer.

Replace the screws and bezel, and you're finished.

Hope this helps

How do I replace the keyboard?

next to the F1 key and the windows key (2nd upper key and second to last key) are two screws, usually under some covering. unscrew and lift top edge of the keyboard towards the trackpad to lay face down. Undo the wire ribbon by lifting the grey or brown tabs and remove ribbon and keyboard. Then install the new keyboard by inserting the ribbon on the place. Lock down with the tabs and put the plastic prongs (close to the space bar) into the laptop body first, and then close keyboard onto the final position. screw back in and thats all. The m and caps lock keys on my Toshiba satellite

Bad keyboard. This series have a higher frequency of keyboard problems because ... well .. the keyboard cable got folded by design. Just replace it. The A40's uses the same keyboard as a A10, A15, A55, A60, A64, 1400, 1405, 1410, 1415, 2400, 2405, 2410, 2415 ... and many others. A new replacement keyboard should run about $20 on eBay.

Replacing the KB is easy: lift up the power button board above the keyboard, remove the three screws holding the keyboard down, then remove the keyboard connector cover panel, and you'll be able to disconnect the keyboard.
