Sony str-dg820. having a problem getting video on tv

I have a sony STR-DG820 Receiver with the following components.

Motorola HD cable box (hooked up with hdmi cable)
Xbox360 (hooked up with propritary 6 RCA jack cables)
DVD Player (hooked up with 3 RCA connectors)
LG 42" LCD TV (hooked up with hdmi cable)

The cable box works fine with the TV, receiver and external speakers.
The problem is the DVD and Xbox. There is audio out of the processor, but no video. Neither of these hook up with HDMI. Any ideas?

Hook up Composite / Component Monitor Out wire from receiver to TV video input because receiver will not change analog input into HDMI
You need to connect receiver and TV through analog video terminals as above.
Actually you are expecting that receiver will convert DVD player and Xbox analog video input into digital HDMI signal for TV and This is incorrect.

Will the Sony STR-DG820 receiver support 3D?

I have this amp and mine does not have the latest firmware (indicated by a green or blue dot near the serial number) and it does not pass through Audio or Video when a 3D Blu-Ray is played in my PS3 although my TV (Sony Bravia XBR-52HX909) does say "3D Video Signal Detected." No audio or video ever plays but the PS3 looks like it's playing.

I just purchased a STR-DG820. I get a green light when I turn on the power, but I get no digital display. I tried it standing alone, then with components connected - same outcome. Because of an error in...

Didn't you get a manual with either one?

Page 29....

>>> Before using the receiver for the first time, initialize the reciver by performing the following procedure. This procedure can also be used to return settings you have made to factory defaults.

1 Press POWER to torn of the receiver.
2 Hold down TONE MODE and 2CH/A DIRECT and then press POWER to turn on the receiver.
3 Release the TONE MODE and 2CH/A DIRECT after a few seconds.

After "CLEARING" appears on the display for a while, "CLEARED" appears. <<<

See if that helps.

Picture/audio problems on my HDTV

This is a cable box problem. Could be a lack of signal stregnth or bad HDMI output.

The SA boxes have a very bad history of this, try using the component video output and see if the problem persists.

The HDMI is a real glass jaw of those boxes; but this problem could absolutly be your incoming signal...high def channels require more signal strength and that is what causes audio drops, pixilation and flicker.

If it was the HDMI in the receiver/tv you would get:

- Black screen, Pink fuzz or green streak dropouts.
- "Fireflies"
- Audio cutting in and out
- Not pixilation!

So what is my approach? If the box is rented or under warranty get it replaced. If the problem persists then call your cable company and arrange a service call at their expense.

If the box is not under warrenty go ahead and call the cable company and complain about a poor signal. If the signal is good, use the component video output...it looks almost identical anyway.

Let me know if this helps,

Cheers!

I am setting up Sony A/V Rcvr and cannot get video

hi my names josh your feeds arent going to feed out through that hdmi if your have hdmi coming in you will get that signal going out however depending on what your signal source is for the rest of your compenents that will determine your problem for instance if you if your runing all compenent which y p b or video which is just standard yellow red and white cables you have to stay with one or the other what you go into your reciever with you must go out with if analog wich is just video and audio you have to go out through your monitor out source to get a picure if compenent whic by the way will produce a far greater picture it is your y p and b jacks and the color of those are green blue and red those are just for picture only not audio you have to still run audio with these cables you go in the unit with those you have to go out with those directly to your tv then you want check you reciever video setting to make sure it is set for that and well as your tv to make sure you are in the right monitor or screen to get your picture

I have a str dg820 only about 2 months old. Recently went to power up and I get PROTECTOR message and it shuts down. I checked all speaker connections and they appear to be fine. It worked well for two...

Try disconnecting everything (all inputs, outputs and speakers, make sure there is no cable plugged into your unit except the power cord), turn it on, if it still shows the protect message, you have an internal short or a burnt out component inside the unit, possibly a desoldered contact on one of the connectors which generates internal noise of such intensity that it sends the unit into the protect mode.

If, after trying the above mentioned, there's no message, some other possibilities are:

- a bad speaker or speaker cable
- a bad signal interconnection cable
- a fault in any of the other units connected to your reciever/amplifier

Hope you cand find something out...

Good luck

Sony-DG820 Subwoofer

The powered subwoofer should be connected to the black subwoofer output near the bottom of the receiver in just about the center. A subwoofer uses line level signals and has its own amplifier, Good chance that you wiped out a channel. Put the wiring back the way it was, and IF the channel was not directly connected to the speaker terminals, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE it will still work.
Chances are slim...
