Try disconnecting all of the likely boot sequence options (HD, CD drive, etc.) then see if you can get into the bios. What are you trying to boot to/from?

Some Compaqs have the BIOS disabled or several options disabled. It would be more helpful if I knew what your goal was. Standard is to hold F10 when you see the compaq logo...

PXE-E61 : MEDIA TEST FAILURE , CHECK CABLE

Normally, your laptop should be configured to boot up from the hard drive before trying the network boot up. When the hard drive fails or is no longer available, or the boot up sequence in BIOS Setup has been changed so that the network boot is set before the hard drive, the symptom you describe fails.
I would recommend that you do the following:
1. Check BIOS Setup & make sure the boot sequence is set in the correct order (Hard Drive 0 should be before Network Boot).
2. Make sure that the hard drive is seated properly in its slot & that all connections are tight.
3. Make sure that the hard drive powers up when you turn on the laptop.

If none of this helps, then your hard drive has failed & might need to be replaced.

My compac presario 700 laptop worked up until yesterday then the screen went crazy with pixils all over the screen and unable to see anything. I restarted and the laptop justs kicks on and off with...

well, Diane, you could press F2 whilst booting to get into bios pages.Navigate here with "tab" and arrow keys.Make changes and save and exit or restore to factory defaults.Note your pc's hardware and boot sequence for future reference.you might have to re-install your Operating system from disks if you have them, not all pc's have the ability to restore OS from the harddrive only ones that have the image held there.----Good luck!

My compaq presario lap top computer is started but screen stays black tried running auto fix thing that comes up but doesnt change anything

Sounds like your bios options might need to be enabled (boot up sequence) that is if you have a decent operating system otherwise press F2 whilst booting to get into bios pages, familiarise yourself with these pages and when you are confident save and exit changes or reset values to default.--good luck!

How t install windows xp on compaq laptops 104 108 tu

Have a bootable operating system disc. Make sure you have set your boot sequence in your bios: 1st-CD, 2nd-Floppy and last Harddisk drive. To go to your bios, when rebooting your system, press your Del key continuosly until it opens you to your bios menu. Save and exit after setting your boot sequence.

HP Compaq Presario V6000T

Hi,
what you need to do, is go into the Bios. usually F2 at setup.
Or esc or delete. you have to press a few times at bootup.
Once in the bios screen, find the page where you can change the boot sequence. it,s probably set to boot from HDD( hard disk ) set it to boot from CD/DVD first then FDD Or HDD second.
when you save and exit, it will boot from the dvd drive, this will give you access, to use the cd drive first.
then re-install your operating system.
