Playing movies from external hard drive

What is the best way to get quality DVD movies to my external hard drive. Methods I am considering,.... 1. play DVDs on desktop to save to external drive. 2. download DVD or movie from web then save to external hard drive. Will both these methods work ?
What device is need to connect my external hard drive to my TV to play these movies ?

Both methods will work, but you will tend to have more control on the quality of the saved video if you "rip" the DVD yourself.  There are several methods to rip a DVD.  One, you can use the program SUPER, which is free, to rip to a single file.  Otherwise you will have to use several programs.  The second method is to use DVD Decrypter to rip the dvd. Then use VOB2MPG to combine the separate VOB files.  Finally, use SUPER to compress the DVD video to your liking.  In order to use your external hard drive to display to your TV, you have 2 choices.  One, move your computer to your living room and buy an aftermarket video card to output to the TV.  Two, buy a cheap computer which can run video w/o lagging and install an aftermarket video card to output to the TV.  I hope this helps in your DVD video adventures.

Both of those would be perfect solutions. As both Western Digital and Iomega have not made much news about these two devices, I had not realized they existed. They would be the best solution for you. Just make sure you convert the video into the correct format.

Need more information to really help you. Are you playing movies in the DVD/CD player of the laptop? Are you playing movies by streaming from Netflix or Amazon or Hulu or Xfinity? Are you playing movies from an external hard drive or flashdrive plugged into an older USB 2.0 port?
Your wi-fi connection may be too slow to stream without freezing. Your cpu/processor may be too old and slow to handle HD video. Your video/graphics chip built-in to the laptop may be old and not capable of handling HD quality video.

How to transfer movies from dvds to my western digital passport essential

Assuming you have a DVD drive and your HD is already set up, all you have to do is insert the DVD, open "My Computer", open the DVD drive folder and copy the files inside it to your HD folder. If you have trouble playing the video, download the VLC player, it plays almost anything, if you still have trouble, right click on the video folder and click play with VLC player.

If they are video files, movies and the like, the best way is to burn them to a disk and then simply delete them from the drive.

External Hard Drive

If you plan to store movies on the HD, better buying a 1TB hard drive. WD Mybook is one of the best external HD.

To rip and store DVD movies into the hard disk you will need a specific software, like the ones below.

DVD Converter - convert DVD video to AVI/MPEG/DIVX files

Freeware converts DVD AVI MPEG WMV RM to MP3 or iPod Video

Movie2x Freeware DVD Converter Download

DVDx (freeware from labDV)

Playing movies from external hard drive

Hi rox09
Well you can rip your DVD to any external drive using and third party DVD ripping software ,once you do that you will get a AVI,MPEG and any common fomats your DVD player supports

Inorder to play those files in your DVD player ,you need the check whether your DVD has a USB input port or else if you laptop or computer has a S-video out put and your TV has S-Video input ;you can play directly from your laptop/computer to the TV using a S-video Cable which is available in any Computer shop.
I hope this helps
