dashboard doesn't require a lot of juice. check the front lights and make sure they're nice and bright. if they are, then the problem is probably the starter. if they're not bright, then you probably need to clean the terminals and make sure they're tight.
Sounds like you might have wire problem.
Try turning the key to the point before ignition. This is actually a dashboard test that have all lights on the dashboard turn on. Try to see if the lights are completely bright or a bit dull in the light.
You battery might be uncharging itself, instead of charging. I have tried that. even with an only 1-2 day old battery.
