What you are dealing with is not a bad remote controller, the problem is from your IR Sensor. You will need to replace this IR Sensor. You Vizio TV has a common defect with the IR Sensor. Make sure you order the revised version so you don't encounter this problem again. You can find the IR Sensor here: 3637 0022 0189 0171 1671 0892 Vizio IR Sensor

Most of the time, we've seen the remote fail. Sometimes we are able to service the remote. Sometimes, the IR LED and or the crystal fails in the remotes. If it is more than this, it is impossible to have internal service parts for most remotes. It takes service experience to be able to change these parts.
On rare occasions the IR remote sensor and remote processor area in the set can have a failure. It is best to try another remote to verify this before sending the set for service.
The most common causes of failure of a remote controller is dropping, rough handling, getting food and drink inside, or putting the batteries in backwards.

SOURCE: vizio remote control not working
Hi, I had the same problem. My vizio remote for my 42 inch 2 month old vizio also seemed to stop working. Here's what I did: My vizio remote (like most remote's nowadays) was designed for multiple components (tv, dvd, vcr, etc). All you need to do to make the remote work again is set it back to tv. Now, the confusing thing about vizio remotes is that they actually have TWO places where you can switch the remote to the appliance you want to control. One is on top of the remote, the other is on the BOTTOM. Switch it back to TV using the BOTTOM. My remote had stopped working because I had inadvently switched it to another component on the BOTTOM component switch.

Hi,
Before I proceed, though, it would help me to know if the cable remote works with the TV, or if neither remote works.
When you use your new remote, then
look at the red LED at the end of the remote, but look at it through a
cell phone camera. Once you do, press a button on the remote and see if
you notice the LED illuminating.
Let me know,so that we could proceed.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

You can use your phone camera to test the remote. Place the remote to the camera and push to see the IR on the camera. If this works for more than 3 minutes then the IR detector or the processor circuit in the main board is faulty.
This means you need to remove the main panel and use a multimeter to test when the remote is used, trace and see if the fault leads further to the processor.
