USB port problems with hp printer

I have a ne Hp Photosmart C5180 All in one printer. Installed correctly, it worked for one week. Then for some reason, computer disconnected printer. USB port would not recognize printer. With help of HP help service, ended up uninstalling drivers, entering C prompt window and typing stuff in to make it work. For some reason, USB port had dissappeared. This worked. Printer worked for three weeks, then again printer disconnected, USB port not recognizing printer. This happened after an update patch for XP. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled, worked with HP support. USB port still not recognizing hardware. I've given up. Any suggestions as to how to get computer to recognize hardware, USB ports,...keep printer talking to computer for more than three weeks at a time? -- zippyma Using my hp 3745 with linux, I was able to see that the usb connection i.e. the usb port on the printer, was the problem and not the drivers. There would be sporadic usb connection and the connection often gets lost when the printer is moved. But some fiddling around with the port fixes it. There was no centre piece of plastic in the port as one commenter pointed out. Running the command lsusb, my pc was not able to see the printer although it was plugged in although it detected my usb drive. This was true regardless of which ports on my pc the devices were plugged in and trying different usb cables. So that left the printer port as the problem.

The first paragraph was from another thread of someone with a similar problem. The second paragraph was my solution i.e. it was the printer port. My post was put into a new thread because I was using a different printer.

Your USB ports on your computer are plug and play. If you have issues with your USB port, it is port related, driver related or device related. The following solutions will help you identify the problem to resolve your USB port issues.
To Identify a Working USB Port
Begin troubleshooting your USB ports by checking Device Manager to see if your USB ports or hubs are working properly.

  1. Click the Start button. ClickControl Panel.
  2. ClickSystem and Maintenance.
  3. ClickDevice Manager.
  4. Double-clickUniversal Serial Bus controllersand check to see if all your USB ports, hubs and controllers are functioning correctly. Any devices not functioning will have a yellow exclamation mark in front of them.
  5. If Device Manager shows any USB ports, hubs or controllers are not functioning, check for updated drivers.

To Update the USB Port Driver

An out-of-date BIOS driver can create issues with your system recognizing the USB port.
  • Watch a Video on Steps to Update Bios on Your Computer.
    1. When the update process is complete, your computer will restart again to load the operating system with the new driver version installed.

Printer HP Photosmart C5180 Series cannot be contacted over the network

Check with HP for a Windows 7 driver for the printer. HP Ink Jets require proper drivers to work correctly. Once you have downloaded and installed the drivers try connecting again.
If you have installed the drivers and Windows 7 still refuses to "talk" to the printer, you may have to adjust your advanced network settings as well. Open up the Network and Sharing center, click on advanced sharing settings and make sure file and printer sharing is turned on. Also check "File Sharing Connections" and enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption.
If that fails to work you may need to speak with HP support for further assistance.

My printer worked fine until Windows 7 downloaded something supposed to make printers work even better. Now Word, Excel and Adobe files don't print. There is no error message. I hit the print button and it...

Contacted HP Chat support. After investigating a bit they had me add a new printer using the virtual USB port and designating that printer as the HP OfficeJet 6500 E709A series. I did so and made that the default printer. Immediately Word, Excel and Adobe documents were once again printing.

Laptop does not detect new Canon printer. Connection/Insert to Printer USB is very loose. Could this be the problem?

It could be that the USB port is broken. Do you have anything else you could try in the same port to see if it is working, or do you have another port to try it in? Also, do you have a disc with the printer and if so have you installed it?

Just installed my HP photosmart C5180 all in one, I connected threw a USB I have uninstalled then reinstalled. Same problem scanner and copier does not work. there is a screen that said there is a DDE...

I would search for latest drivers for the photosmart and download them. Than turn on machine before connecting to computer.
Also you should go to control panel, printers, and see if your machine is listed there and set as default printing device.

I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO ACCESS MY USB PORT CONNECTED TO MY PRIN

You save your data to to the USB 'stick' via your PC's USB port, not the port on the printer. This port is simply for printing information already contained on the stick.

USB port problems with hp printer

There are few things to remember using USB.
  • If your System is in hybernation mode, don't remove any attached USB device, because it will damage your USB driver. This is one of the known problem from microsoft.
  • If you have to remove any USB device use 'Safely Remove Hardware'.

To remove currepted USB drivers its not enough to remove your printer drivers.
  1. You should un-install the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' from Device Manager.
  2. Then re-boot to clean registry.
  3. Install the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' using XP Setup CD.
  4. Then check the Mass storage, PDA etc, it should recognized by XP.
  5. Then install printer driver (don't attach printer to system untill setup finish or setup says to connect).

I think it will fix.
Please let me know your feed-back.

Thanks

Scannen c5180 by ethernet

Have you tried connecting to your printer through the EWS (a direct connection using the printer's IP address). If you manually set up the IP to say 192.168.1.205 , then you would go to your browser and type http://192.168.1.205 which would then bring up the EWS page. This gives some general information for setup & basic testing including scanning. My C5180 has the same networked issue, a port scan reveals loss of connection on UDP.
The C5180 appears to use UDP: 161-SNMP,137-Netbios,427 Server Location.TCP: 21-File Transfer,80-www HTTP,139-Netbios Session service,9100-HP JetDirect card,9500 ISM Server.
