1990 dakota engine shutting down randomly

Keeps shutting down randomly. will run fine for a while then shuts down. acts like you just turned off the key. Will not restart for a few minutes. If key is on you can pull plug on computer let set for 5 sec and plug back in. Truck starts and runs. sometimes it will shutdown again in a mile or 2. Other times Randomly. never at the same place or time. Have replaced computer with spare. removed or replaced fusible links. changed fuel shutoff relay. Pickup in distributor is a few years old.

There is a crank position on your truck

  • Anonymous Oct 30, 2012

nope uses Distributor and pickup basicly the same system since 73. The only difference is it is using a self diagnostic ignition control modual (computer). Instead of the old one used from 72 to 89.

ok my 1988 dakota had one that is why I was thinking. maybe try an other computer

  • Anonymous Oct 30, 2012

Tried that have another 90 dakota just for parts. Has to be a sensor somewhere heating up and shorting out. Forcing the computer to shutdown.

SOURCE: 1995 nissan pickup truck fuel problem

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.

If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.

Why does 91 dodge dakota shuts off power to coil after driving

The auto shut down relay controls power to the coil and fuel injection so if on power is at the coil once the engine dies this is normal check cranking it should return but no spark then test the crank shaft sensor iit is on back of engine passenger side bolted to block.

I have a 1990 dodge dakota 3.9 liter v6...idles rough and stalls out at stopping...i have changed cap rotor plugs and wires...and also the throttle positioning sensor...no change..any ideas would be...

Do the service below.

Engine stalling and rough run issue at low speeds

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If this doesn't improve the problem you have mechanical problems in the engine like a low cylinder die to worn rings or leaking valve seats.

1998 Dodge Dakota radiator fan does not shut off

.if your truck is over heating with a temp. higher than the normal whicjh supposedly, then the fan keeps on. but if the temperature of your engine is normal when you look at the gauge, then the thermostat attached to the engine below it is fine.
The problem as we go back that your fan keeps on turning, even though your getting a normal temperature., probably get new coolant temperature sender sensor.
To check your temperature sender disconnect the plug from the sender and test it using an ohm meter. When the engine is cold you should have infinite resistance. Then run the engine untill it gets warm. Shut off the motor. Disconnect the plug from your temperature sender and check the resistance again. It should no longer be infinite ( see your repair manual for the correct reading).
