I have a 320gb hard drive for my Xbox and when it is inserted it doesn't show on the dashboard for memory devises

In this process your hard drive will be formatted, so back up all files to another hard drive, laptop, or be prepared to lose everything on your hard drive. After you have backed everything up, plug your hard drive into an Xbox 360 then go 'My Xbox/System Settings/Memory.Select 'USB Storage Device/Configure Now' then accept the warning. After the formatting is complete a Performance Warning box will appear, click 'OK.' Now in the 'Storage Devices' screen you should see a new option 'Memory Unit.' This shows that the formatting was successful. Disconnect your hard drive, then connect it to your laptop, load on some media (makes sure the file types are compatible), then reconnect it to your Xbox 360. Your selected media should not appear under 'Portable Device' in the Video/Music/Picture Library.

Xbox doesnt read disks

If you have a Hard Disk Drive or Memory attached to the console, turn the console off and remove the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) unit and any attached Memory Unit (MU), then switch on your console and try the disc again. If this seems to resolve the issue, turn off your console, attach the HDD and MU again, and then delete any saved games for the game that is causing problems.
Note If it is possible to do so, save the games to a separate MU.
To find out how to remove and connect the Hard Disk Drive from your console, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

I NEED HELP

There could possibly be something wrong with the disk tray or the lasers inside the Xbox 360 that reads the disk. The best option would be to contact Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-Xbox and tell them the disk tray is messing up. They will most likely tell you that they will fix it, and you send it off to them for it to be fixed.
When you send it off, make sure you remove everything from the Xbox 360 (cables and hard drive) because the one they will send you back will most likely be a refurbished Xbox 360, not your actual 360. It sucks, I know, but its free to fix.
The whole process usually takes 3-4 weeks.
