Plays dvds on xbox 360 fine, but no picture for games/dashboard

Hello, my Sharp LC32SB23U is having a strange problem i don't seem to know how to remedy. i have my xbox 360 hooked up to the component input with component cables. when i play dvd's on my xbox, the picture and sound function properly and everything is great. however, when a dvd is not in use, the screen is black, though i can hear and still control the xbox dashboard. the screen stays black even when a game is being played, but again, i can hear the sound and even control the game. just no visual. i tried my xbox on another similar lcd tv and everything was fine with the xbox. I've tried everything i can think of and everything recommended in the manual. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Already solved it. thanks. i couldn't see the xbox settings blade because of the blank screen so switched my component cable to the tv setting instead of the hdtv setting, then i could see the dashboard in non-hd and switched the resolution to 720p while simultaneously switching the component cable back to the hdtv setting. that worked.

My xbox only plays dvds

If your Xbox 360 will not play your games this is because of the sensors on the back of the drive overheating it is not normally the laser.

Luckily you can fix this yourself and get back to your games and to do this you need the proven Xbox 360 Repair guide.

Or you can send it in and they will fix it for you the repair will take about 4 weeks.

Sometimes for some strange reason it will read just movies!

My xbox dont play games it just plays dvds how do i fix it

1. Make sure your game discs are all clean, free of scratches, etc.

2. Test multiple games to ensure that it isn't isolated to just one or two discs

3. Unplug your 360, wait a few minutes, plug it back in, and attempt it again (full power cycles sometimes help these strange issues.)

4. Ensure you have the latest firmware upgrade (you'll need to connect the 360 to the Internet to download the latest upgrade.)

Also, if your 360 is modified in any way, this could affect your ability to play game discs, depending on the settings and the type of modification.

If above given steps do not work, kindly send yor Xbox 360 to MS support, and do not try to flash your drive at home, it would void your warranty

Xbox 360 wont play the games but will play cds and dvds !!!!

Mocrosoft only entended the warranty on the "ring of death" issue which was hardware related to overheating.  They did not extend the warranty to any other issues.  DVD/CD emulators and the games emulators are handled by different software.
You can try a factory reset of the console...

Before trying this, it's highly recommend that you remove all hard drive and memory cards. Once you've removed all hard drives and memory cards, navigate to the systems tab in the main menu and select the “Initial Setup” option. Once you select the option, it will ask you if want to run the initial setup that occurred when you first started your console. Say yes and it will do its thing. When it asks for a memory card/hard drive, just decline and it should be done. You should see the default dashboard screen as confirmation that it did, in fact, rerun initial setup.

Resetting to factory defaults / resetting parental locks
This might work only with older versions of Xbox 360 dashboard.

Press the following key combination

Left Trigger, Right Trigger, X, Y, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, Up, Left Bumper, Left Bumper, X

This should give you a dialogue asking whether or not you want to reset your system to factory default settings.

If none of this works contact Microsoft and see if the console is still under warranty.  If not they will repair it for usually 99.00
