AV inputs are for standard analog video which is 480i. HDMI and Component inputs are the high definition inputs that run at either 1080i or 1080p You won't ever get 1080i or p through AV inputs.

SOURCE: want to change my sharp hd tv from 480i to 1080p

You Can Not Change. The TV Recognize the signal on the INPUT.
If the signal is 480i than the tv shows 480i
If the signal is 1080p than the tv shows 1080p (if supported)
If you try with your areal antenna (for now digital broadcast is maximum 1080i (in USA) The TV itself doesnt "upconvert" lower resolution signals.

SOURCE: How to change from 480i to 1080i

The TV has a automatic scalier chip installed so it depends on the input signal that you are using. For example you are using a HDMI connection with a xbox 360 and you set the display setting to 720P then the TV will display it in 720P. If you set it to 480P then it will display it in 480P.

I have a Sharp TU-T2 freeview HD set top tuner. I inadvertently set the HD output to 1080p but my TV only accepts 1080i. An error message "out of range" appears whenever I switch on the set top...

Here is the correct solution from the user manual:

Hold the HDMI button on the remote control for 5 seconds to reset the output to 1080i

Worked for me.

Well everytime we hook up the HDMI for the playstation 3 to the tv it says invalid format how do i fix this

You must make sure your playstation and your TV set are both set for the same video format (1080p, 1080i, 720p, etc.).

You can either go through all your HDTV formats until it synchs up (give each a good 20 seconds or so before moving on), or you can open the display menu for your PS/3 using a different video connection to your set (i.e. composite), setting both to match, then switching them to HDMI.

Our pitchure is not bright or clear as was in store

This actually common I worked in electronics for 13 years. Did they tell you that it has to be hooked up to an High Definition source. A digital cable or Sattelite reciever does not mean its HD also using Coaxle cableor composite(yellow, red, white) will not produce a good picture. You need HDMI or Component(RED,Blue,Green for video and red white for audio) to get a high def pic. Also not all station are broadcast in high def. One other thing is even if you have a High Def reciever you need to go into the menu of the reciever where it says display and and make sure its set for 1080i or maybe 1080p(most dont have this option yet) If you are using a normal DVD player and use the yellow red and white once again picture will be poor. Need to use Component or hdmi and again with component you need to set DVD to either 480p and if its upconvert to 1080p

Hi, I'd like to use a blue-ray DVD player to play movies on my JVC-48WP55. But the TV set does not have a HDMI plug. What's the best solution in this case? Thanks! Ben

check plugs on back of set. most likely you have component (green, blue and red). That will give you 1080i resolution. Of course that's not as good as the 1080p coming out of the bluray but at least it will be high def.

TV set always starts up indicating 420p. How do I get it to 1080?I have Bell expressvu HD

is your cable or sat in HD(720p, 1080i, 1080p) over the air broadcast in the usa is in digital so it should start at the highest res available in your area

next are you using HDMI or composite for your cable or sat going into your tv if not your not going to get higher than 420p because A/V and S-video do NOT support HD

check your cable/sat box is it HD(high def) or SD(standard def) if SD going through cattv/attn in your only going to get 420p

now for changing the resolution its automatic it goes to the highest setting on its own

you can control the resolution through your cable/sat box, blue ray/hddvd player and other HD devices connected to the tv through the options menus of those devices BUT only when connected through

HDMI(supports 720p, 1080i, 1080p)
composite(supports 420p, 420i, 720p)
A/v and S-video(supports 420p)
cat tv/attn in(supports 420p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) only supports what the tuner will do

i=50hz
p=60hz

Adjust the system's video output settings. Select the best output settings for the TV in use.

1. Check the resolution supported by your TV.
Resolution (video mode) varies depending on the TV type. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the TV.

2. Select (Display Settings) under (Settings) in the home menu.

3. Select [Video Output Settings].

4. Select the connector type on your TV.
Resolution (video mode) varies depending on the type of connector used.

Input connector on the TV Supported video modes (NTSC region) *1 Supported video modes (PAL region) *1
HDMI 1080p / 1080i / 720p / 480p 1080p / 1080i / 720p / 576p
Component / D-Terminal *2 1080p / 1080i / 720p / 480p / 480i 1080p / 1080i / 720p / 576p / 576i
Composite / S Video *3 480i 576i
AV MULTI / SCART *4 480p / 480i 576p / 576i
*1 The video mode options vary depending on the region where the PS3™ system was purchased. In North America, Asia and other NTSC regions, 480i video mode is displayed as [Standard (NTSC)]. In Europe and other PAL regions, 576i video mode is displayed as [Standard (PAL)]. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the product.

*2 D-terminal is a connector type used mainly in Japan. The resolutions supported by D1-D5 are as follows:
D5: 1080p / 720p / 1080i / 480p / 480i
D4: 1080i / 720p / 480p / 480i

*4 AV MULTI is a format mainly used in Japan. SCART is a format mainly used in Europe. If [AV MULTI / SCART] is selected, the screen allowing you to select the type of output signal will be displayed.

5. Change video output settings.
Change the resolution for the video output. Depending on the connector type selected in step 4, this screen may not be displayed.

6. Set the resolution.
Select all resolutions supported by the TV in use. Video will automatically be output at the highest resolution possible for the content you are playing from among the selected resolutions.*
* The video resolution is selected in order of priority as follows: 1080p > 1080i > 720p > 480p/576p > Standard (NTSC:480i/PAL:576i).
If [Composite / S Video] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting resolutions will not be displayed.
If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically adjust the resolution (the HDMI device must be turned on). In this case, the screen for selecting resolutions will not be displayed.

7. Set the TV type.
Select the type of TV in use. Set when only SD resolution (NTSC:480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) is to be output such as when [Composite / S Video] or [AV MULTI / SCART] is selected in step 4.

8. Check your settings.
Confirm that the image displayed is at the correct resolution for the TV. You can go back to a previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the button.

9. Save your settings.
The video output settings are saved on the PS3™ system. You can continue on to set audio output settings. For details on audio output, see (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings] in this guide.

Upscale from 480p Signal via HDMI

ok the problem might not be with your receiver it is with your direct tv settings. Double check to make sure you go to the format and set it up to be fixed or 1080i whichever will give you the highest resolution. Check your manual for the direct tv receiver. If this is all correct for the DTV then you must go into the setup on the receiver and at hardware icon toward bottom check on that box, now goto the hdmi settings and make sure it is set to through. this will allow the best picture with no upscaling which will degregade picture for blu ray. so your direct tv will be only 1080i but very impressive. if you still want to upscale you can then you have to change the hdmi settings from before to upscale 1080p . I just hope that your dtv can output 1080i it will give a better picture than 480p even if both are upscaled to 1080p
Oh i forgot to ask if you are connected through hdmi to the tv. Hdmi is the only option for upscaling
