Can this receiver accept hdmi cables?? - Denon AVR-886 Receiver

This receiver does not accept HDMI cables or any other High Definition cables.

To receive HD content, you need to purchase an HD receiver with HD outputs such as component or HDMI.

As you can see in the photo, there is no HDMI output on this model, only composite (Red white and yellow) or S-Video (a now dead format)

All you need is patience - some digital things like to take theri time - just look at your PC!
Good quality cables usually just mean a better quality of picture - however it may be worth a try - does a friend have a suitable cable so you can swap yours for a test?

The HDMI[1] input on your TV receives digital audio

and uncompressed digital video and audio from an

HDMI device or uncompressed digital video from a

DVI[2] device.

This input is designed to accept HDCP[3] program

material in digital form from EIA/CEA-861/861B-

compliant[4] consumer electronic devices (such as a settop

box or DVD player with HDMI or DVI output).

The HDMI input is designed for best performance

with 1080i high-definition video signals, but will also
accept and display 480i, 480p, and 720p signals.

To connect an HDMI device, you will need:

• one HDMI cable (type A connector)

For proper operation, it is recommended that you use

a short HDMI cable. You should not encounter

difficulty if you use an HDMI cable shorter than 16.4

ft (5m).

HDMI cable transfers both video and audio.

Separate analog audio cables are not required (see

illustration below). Some CDVs (video CDs) may

not output digital audio signals. In that case, you

may hear sound by connecting analog audio cables.

However, if you connect analog audio cables with

this connection, the HDMI terminal on the TV will

not receive the HDMI digital audio signal and you
will hear analog audio only.

To ensure that the HDMI or DVI device is reset

properly, it is recommended that you follow

these procedures:

• When turning on your electronic components,

turn on the TV first, and then the HDMI or

DVI device.

• When turning off your electronic components,

turn off the HDMI or DVI device first, and
then the TV.

To connect a DVI device, you will need:

• one HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable

(HDMI type A connector)

For proper operation, the length of an HDMI-to-

DVI adapter cable should not exceed 9.8 ft (3m).

The recommended length is 6.6 ft (2m).

This is a very common problem with no real solution. If your TV can be programmed to accept separate audio from HDMI video on the same input, you can feed the audio through standard RCA cables. Unfortunately most TV's do not allow this. Alternatively run them into a stereo receiver. Buying high end HDMI cables will not help. Most people I know with this issue have bit the bullet & just used component video instead. The difference in quality is minimal.

works great, plenty of plug-ins, easy set up, but you get 2 hdmi ins 1 out. hdmis' work great one cable for sound and video but the denon avr588 doesn't accept sound through the hdmi cable.(it's noted in the manual) why not? i don't understand. so you go with optical or coaxial for audio. it works but extra cables.

Use both VGA cable where require,the rest use HDMI cables

I am posting this to try and get everyones audio problem for this receiver fixed. If you only connected the HDMI cable to the 510, you will not get sound. This receiver passes through HDMI only, no processing of audio. You must either connect a fiber optic or digital coax to the 510 for that respective HDMI input from the BD player, the DVD HDMI only accepts digital coax, and the Video2 HDMI only accepts fiber optic. If you BD player does not have digital coax out for audio, you must move the connection to Video2 HDMI and connect fiber optic to the Video2 fiber input. Sony butchered the whole purpose of HDMI with this receiver. Hope this heps you. By the way, it is hardware, no firmware update will correct this.

What port do you have the HDMI from you BD player into on the 510. If you have it on the DVD port then fiber optic will do you no good, the DVD HDMI only supports digital coax, the Video2 HDMI only accepts fiber optic, and there is an extra fiber optic for the Sat input. If your BD player does not have digital coax out, or if you dont want to buy another cable, just move the HDMI from DVD to Video2 on the 510. I am willing to bet you have the BD player plugged into the DVD HDMI port and the fiber optic cable from you BD player to the Video2 fiber input.
