I clicked on something that took me back to the old Google search page and there is no way to go back to the page that had gmail, weather and some news on it. How do I get it back?
Chrome and every browser stores each and every page that you opens in it and it is called as "History". After opening chrome simply press CTRL + H (windows) & COMMAND + H (mac) to open the history and then simply navigate, find the page that you were on and click it. The page shall be opened again.
Secondly, if you only have one window open and no tabs, then you can simply go to forward and back button on the left side of address bar and can navigate back and forth.

1. Set your chorme to use default statup page for google ( E.g. http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=pa )
You can do that by going in OPTIONS -> BASICS
2. Open chorme and you will see google.com is already open
3. Google the name of website you want to browse. ( e.g. type gmail and click search )
4. Right Click the Link to gmail and open in new tab.
5. You have sucessfully opened a new Website in Chorme web browse.

SOURCE: How can i remove movs search engine that keeps
Click on the Spanner Symbol on the top right handside to 'Customize and Control Google Chrome' -> select 'Options' -> Change 'Home page' URL for 'Open this page' to what you want or to just 'about:blank' (without the quotes).
You can also modify your 'Search' engine default on that same 'Options' page.
Hope it helps!
