StartUp sound is good for your system because it will tell you something but if you want to turn it off then try to
press the F10 key on your keyboard to mute you Mac before rebooting or use any app for it. if you want to know the importance of startup sound than follow Apple Support Number .
The mute button/switch, is on the lefthand side of the phone.. It will toggle you iPhone to either vibrate mode or mute, depending on your preferred set settings!
Open System Preferences/Sound/Input. Look at the bottom of that window where it says: Output Volume. There's a slider, then to the right a Mute button. Make sure that is not checked.
If you are getting a big 'NO' symbol when using the volume keys to adjust it, it means your speakers are not being recognized as a valid output source.
Try resetting your SMC:

If that doesn't work, it will likely need repair. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE if issue persists after resetting the SMC.
There is a problem with your audio jack. It thinks that the optical link is plugged in. Look into the jack and you'll see there is a red light for the optical link. Try to clean the jack, if you see and contacts that are recesssed, try to pull them back using a tooth pick. If that fails, the jack needs replacement. Here is an Macbook Repair Guide that shows how to open a Macbook. If you want somebody else to do it for you go to Macbook Repair.
Apple menu (top left) > System Preferences > Sound
click the output tab and move the slider to the max. and make sure the mute check box is not checked.
Sounds like the volume is muted. Right click on the speaker icon and it should allow you to un-mute it. If that does not work, you need to download or reinstall your sound drivers. If you do not have the cd you can get the sound drivers from the apple website.
