The cyclone assembly is glued and cannot be taken apart. The best way of cleaning it , is to remove the top held on with three hex screws , the bottom collecting vessel and the perforated filter. Then blast the cyclones from above with either a pressure washer or hose with a high water pressure source. Leave to completely dry , then reassemble.

How do you get the canster apart on a dyson animal vacuum

Hi Ira,

You should be able to separate the clear bin and cyclone pack by following these steps:

  • Remove cyclone assembly from the machine, and empty it as usual
  • With the bin base still open, use the silver catch at the rear of the clear bin to separate the bin from the cyclone pack
When you have the two parts separated, you can wash the clear bin using cold water. Make sure it's completely dry before reassembling. You can clean any debris from the shroud using a dry cloth or soft brush - however, the cyclone pack must not be washed or submerged in water, as this could cause damage.

I hope this information is useful to you - if you need any further assistance or advice, please call us free on 1-866-693-9766, or email us at [email protected] so we can help.

Best wishes,

My Dyson Animal vacuum smells horribly of dog. It's worse than my dog has ever smelled - even at his worst. How do I take apart the Animal to clean it properly? Can I use a weak water/Chlorox solution...

hi Donna.
Complete removal of pet hair from the home is a quandary many pet owners face. The Dyson Animal series vacuums use centrifugal force to remove animal hair from carpets, floors, curtains and upholstery. The high-powered vacuum is bagless, allowing you to extract pet hair from surfaces without worrying about running out of vacuum bags. As your Dyson Animal vacuum is exposed to pet hair and dander, a smell can develop. Similar to other small appliances, a vacuum needs periodic cleaning to keep it looking and smelling clean. When you use basic cleaning and deodorizing techniques, you can get the smell out of your Dyson Animal vacuum.

Step 1

Remove the bagless receptacle for pet hair according to the directions provided for your Dyson Animal vacuum. Hold the receptacle upside down inside a trash bag and tap the bottom to remove pet hair and dirt.

Step 2

Mix 1/2 tsp. of dishwashing detergent with 1/2 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a clean cloth into the soap solution and wring it out.

Step 3

Wash the inside and outside of the receptacle with the cloth to remove dirt and dander that cause odor. Rinse the receptacle with a cloth dampened with water. Dry it thoroughly with another cloth.

Step 4

Remove the HEPA filter from your Dyson Animal vacuum. Pick visible clumps of pet hair off the filter and discard them. Flush the filter with cool water to wash out dirt and hair. Rinse the filter until the water runs clean. Gently squeeze the filter and allow it to air-dry for up to 12 hours to ensure it dries completely.

Step 5

Moisten a cloth with undiluted vinegar. Wipe off the exterior of the vacuum with the vinegar. Deodorize the receptacle and interior areas, where the bagless receptacle and filter go, by wiping them with the vinegar-moistened cloth. Dry the vacuum with a clean cloth.

Step 6

Place two drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball. Drop the cotton ball into the receptacle before securing it to the vacuum to prevent odor from building up. Vanilla extract is an effective natural odor absorber.

hope this helps you out.

My Dyson is clogged on top of the cyclones and I cannot find a way to open it up to get the clog out. Please help me. I have the purple upright Dyson. Thank you

Hi, Thankyou for using FixYa, We love to fix things.

Hi your version of the Dyson is the Animal if its purple.

Right, here we go.

1. Firstly you have to detach the cyclone from the main spine, as you would when you wish to take it off to empty it. So you now have the Cyclone and the clear plastic bin in your hand.
2 Next we need to empty the clear plastic bin, just do this as you normally would by pulling the little Silver lever which is underneath the handle. The handle i am refering to says Dyson on it, curved shape. This releases the bin flap and lets any debris fall out. So you now have the cyclone and the bin with the bin flap open.
3. to seperate the Clear bin from the cyclone the bin flap must be open. At the top of the bin and the bottom of the cyclone at the front (directly down from the handle) you will see a purple lever attached to the cyclone and a clear handle on the bin itself. Simply push the purple lever upwards and the bin will seperate from the cyclone.

4. You will now have access to the cyclone.

5. To clean the cyclone properly i would suggest you powerwash it completly. You can also clean inside the cyclone as well as cleaning the wee holes at the top of it.

6. I would then recommend you use a germ killer such as mild bleach on the cyclone. rinse then let dry before using. Do not let water get into the Dyson motor as this will damage it.

7. You can also clean the bin using a pwer washer and bleach or Mr Muscle etc.

8. Simply re-attache the bin to the cyclone. It just clicks back in.

I hope you found this advise usefull

I have a Dyson Animal upright (purple). I took it apart to clean the cyclone chambers. When re-assembling the bottom closed before the opening rod was inserted. I can't get the opening rod installed with...

I looked in our DC07. I would try removing the top again and getting a long dowel or the opening rod, insert it down into the unit and PUSH. The opening rod opens the latch by pushing it, not pulling it. Here are some pictures of the latch. Top pic is in the unlock position. Bottom is the normal position.

I hope this helps.
