Strimmer Starter strip

Hi Kathy - more likely than not there's a little "tab" on the end of the spring that slips it to a tab in the plastic to maintain spring tension.

These break off fairly regularly and you can easily bend the spring steel to a 90 degree to "fix it" and place it back in the tab.

I've included a teardown / rebuild video that should be very helpful when repairing your weedeater - it's a "generic" ryobi video but they're all really, really similar.

First remove the pull starter housing.
The next part is tricky. You'll have to release and unwind the spring that rewinds the pull starter cord. Remember how you do this because after replacing the cord, you'll have to rewind the cord and spring before inserting it back in the housing.
re-attach the pull cord housing to the chain saw.

The starter pulley looks fine, however the small starter pawl and spring is missing rom the starter cup on the crank, it should be retained with a c clip from behind the cup

Its an easy opperation to undertake if you know how. Take note of where everything goes during the stripping down of the recoil assembly. Use eye protection when trying to recoil the rewind spring, they have a tendency to jump back out at you while coiling them back in. easiest way is to start by putting the hooked end into the plastic housing and work your way inwards coiling it back in. Then place the starter cord roller in on top, adding the one or two black sliders, the washer and the spring clip to hold it all in place.

You will have to remove the starter rewind mechanism and rewind the cord around the pulley, then pre- load a certain amount of tension on the rewind spring.

The starter cord is spring loaded. When the spring breaks your cord won't rewind. Usually the whole starter cord assembly is easily replaced and readily available at your local gardening goods retailer. They might even install it for you for a nominal fee.
