I had the exact same problem, after multiple resets I realised the problem was low battery. I measured the voltage and it was indeed 2.8v when it should be closer to 3.3v. try replacing the battery and it will work fine.

go into your CF and delete all the unused CO times..for instance if your using 3 periods...delete all CF05 and F05 the last one should be C04=0 and F04=0 make sure your NPV is the same after messing around..then try to compute IRR popped up in 2 seconds for me.

SOURCE: calculator reset

Hello,
Whenever you start a new problem, you are supposed to press [2nd][Reset][ENTER] to set all variables to defaults. When you do that calculator displays RST 0.00.
Is the calculator gently doing it for you every time you start a problem?
Hope it helps.

For depreciation worksheets press [2nd][DPR]
For statistics, use [2nd][DATA], or [2nd][STAT].
There are other worksheets [2nd][Delta%], [2nd][DATE], [2nd][PROFIT], [2nd][BRKEVN],[2nd][MEMory].

These shortcuts will not get you anywhere if you do not consult the manual.

How to Calculate IRR?

To calculate IRR and NPVEnter the cash flows as follows, remembering the sign convention:
  • Clear previous data by pressing fXY and fCLX.
  • Enter the cash flow at time zero using # gPV [# CF0].
  • Enter subsequent cash flows using # gPMT [# CFj].
  • If a cash flow is repeated, enter the number of times it is repeated (including the first time you just entered) using # gFV [# Nj]. For example, three equal flows in a row would be entered as3 Nj.
  • When you have entered your last cash flow:
    • If you are calculating an NPV, enter your interest rate as # i (consistent with interval between cash flows) followed by fPV [NPV].

    • If you are calculating an IRR, enter fFV [IRR].
This is an excerpt from http://luna.pepperdine.edu/faculty/mkinsman/calculators/hp12c.html
I did not come up with this solution. Just found it for you.

Why do i get error 5 when trying to compute IRR

Error 5 indicates that no solution exists. In an IRR problem, the most likely cause is that there was not at least one sign change in the cash flow list.
