FYI, I did the 8x upgrade and the unit became flakier. So one time it handled 8x discs and the next no. So it went from very stable to hit or miss. Redid the update and the same problem.

2x RW discs work ok in it and can be read, edited, and formatted in my newer recorder that handles 16x discs.

SOURCE: I can't record with my DVD player on 1x-16x DVDs

This unit is too old and too basic to handle 16x speed. However, there is a firmware update for this model DVD/VCR to record on 8x.

All you have to do is call the toll-free number in your manual and request it. They will send you an update disc.

Here is the basic procedure after you receive the update disc:

1. Turn on your TV and your combo unit. The tray should be closed. The unit must be in DVD mode.

2. Quickly press the sequence CM Skip, 6, 5, 4 (This will switch it into firmware update mode. The tray will eject automatically.)

3. Insert the disc and push the tray back in.

4. The update will begin. It will take approx. 2-3 minutes. It will tell you when it is complete and eject the tray.

5. When it is done, remove the disc, but DO NOT close the tray. It will go back in later. Turn the power off.

6. Wait a few minutes and when the tray goes back in wait about another 10 seconds and then you may turn the unit back on.

Firmware update procedure is now completed.

Using up to 16x disks

This units DVD drive is only able to spin at a max of 8x on DVD-Rs and max of 2x on DVD-RWs. Also, this unit is a - only recorder. This means if it is a +, it's not going to work.
Since the unit is a DVD-R 4x max recorder, the unit will need to have it's firmware upgraded. This will only help to record to a DVD-R 8x. You can purchase this upgrade with the manufacture of the unit. Call the 1-800 number listed in your manual and press 3. They will walk you thru the steps to find out which upgrade is needed.

I cant record

I posted this in another person's question but it is probably relevant to you as well. This model (which I own myself) is outdated and needs a firmware upgrade. You might get lucky and get one from their tech support. However, I heard they stopped shipping them nearly a year ago. As it stands your recorder can only use DVD-R that records at 4x (or lower) and DVD-RW that records at 1x. Any other media is useless. Since 4x media is outdated, it may be hard to find at a major retailer. Let me know if you have any luck fixing this or finding working DVDs as I have had the same issue myself. I simply cannot find 4x DVDs in the store.

Won't Read blank disc!!

Ok, I talked to Samsung support again today, and they confirm that the firmware update should correct the problem of incompatibility with 1-16x discs. They are going to mail a CD with the firmware update to me, at no charge. They were not, however, able to tell me if the file I had originally downloaded from their website was the same as what will be coming on the CD. Sheesh!!

If I can determine that they are the same file, I will post such info. here later. Otherwise, I would advise contacting Samsung support and requesting a disc.

The phone no. is:

Problems recording DVD-R 16X

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.
