Maxtor 3100 configured (USB) with Windows Vista will not work.

Hello.

There are various levels of USB (1.0, 1.1 2.0). It appears that USB 2.0 doesn't recognize the external hard drive but the older USB hub does. I suspect that you have the newer 2.0.

To determine if your computer has a USB 2.0 port (You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps):

Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers.

If the word Enhanced is included in any of the listed controllers, your computer has USB 2.0 controller drivers installed.

Try the Maxtor drive with another computer that has the USB 1.0 or 1.1 ports. If it still doesn't work, the USB interface in the enclosure is defective and you need to return/exchange it.

Hope this helps.

My laptop doesnot recognize my 250 GB Maxtor Basic Portable Storage unit . İt did no include a driver disc when I bought it. I thought that it was a plug and play one. My laptop asks for a driver...

Dear uralorhan,
Do not worry! just try to see your device manager,
START>My Computer>Right click for Propeties>choose HARDWARE tabs and pick the DEVICE MANAGER box.
When you saw the yellow mark USB device (Your MAXTOR should connected first), right click on it and choose UNINSTALL... then Confirm by answer YES.
Then go up to the device manager tool bar and click on SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES.. Wait ..! and there... you should see the windows installed and prepare your MAXTOR to be ready for use..

GoodLucK!

Best Regards,

SeagateFree Agent Go 120 G.B external portable hard drive When I connect that in to my lap top (HP Pavilion) windows can recognize the hard drive and once I connect that same one in to my desktop windows...

you will need to install the drivers for your drive.
xp doesn;t recognize 2.0 usb unless you install drivers and have a usb 2.0 port
but install the drivers and you should get it to recognize

you can go to control panel, system and device manager.
look for a usb device that is not working and right click install drivers or update drivers.
See if it comes up.
Once it does you will see it in the device manager under disk drives
