Viewfinder Blank I have a Nikon D50 that was working fine. After a couple days I turned it on and the viewfinder is totally black. It will take pics and I'm able to review photos, pull up all the menus, etc. but when it's in picture taking mode the viewfinder is black. I've checked the lens and it is not the problem. Any suggestions?? Camera is less than a year old.

In rest mode I can see the mirror and the camera can be turned on without the lens.

This suggests the mirror is stuck up in the take position. Remove the Lens and look at what is behind it In the rest mode you should see a mirror. If it is stuck up you would see the sensor window Which do you see. with the lens off - can the camera be switched on? This might just drop the mirror The mirror is surface silvered - do not touch it. If it still up then it is a repair shop/warranty replacement job.

Some cameras have an internal shutter to blank the eye piece- this would be a knuurled wheel
near the eye piece similar to the dioptre ajustment if there is one .
    Failing that I'll pass

Perfectly good photos but image in view finder will not focus Nikon D80 camera

Try adjusting the viewfinder diopter. There's a little dial just to the right of the viewfinder. Turn it while looking through the viewfinder. You want to be looking at an unfocused view or a blank wall. Turn the dial until the focus brackets are sharp. Make sure you do this with your shooting eye.

You don't. The D50 does not have the ability to display grid lines in the viewfinder.

Nikon D50

Press the down arrow on the navigation dial until it disappears. You may go through a couple of other on-screen indicators until you get back to where you want to be. The down arrow just scrolls through the various on-screen features (histogram, high light areas etc.).

Nikon D50 LCD Display does not work

NatD, The D50 and indeed most SLR digital cameras [ I have a D40 ] does not allow you to take pictures using the LCD display ... this is by design, you are meant to use the viewfinder and the image you see through it is straight through the lens via a mirror block [ called a reflex pentamirror or prism ]. When the mirror is down such that you can see the image in the viewfinder it is obscuring the sensor [ the bit that takes the picture ] and when you take a shot the mirror lifts and the picture is recorded. Its this reason that DSLR's dont use the LCD to shoot, however there are a few now available that do let you do this, such as olympus, new panasonic one and higher end Nikon and Canon cameras. Hope this explains it without getting too detailed!
