Tecumseh Snow King HS40 engine only runs on full choke, no power

OK, have a 5 horse snowblower powered by a Tecumseh HS40 engine. I was having problems starting it and keeping it going, new gas and draining carb and lines got it running. I though I was OK, but now a snow storm and I start the blower, get it running, but it will only run on full choke, stalls if I unchoke it. It also loses power under load i.e. when blowing snow and won' throw. Also, the muffler heats up to red hot - I assume this is not good. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

I have the same problem with my Toro snowblower. The tecumseh carburator needs replacement if you cannot hear a clicking noise when shaking it while holding the choke and throttle flaps. The emulsion tube is stuck if this is the case, and because it is internal, the carb will need replacement. Be careful if you try drillng out the plugs as there is no clearance between the bottom of the plugs and the carb body making it very easy to drill through into the venturi. Hope this helps.

Same problem with HS40 Tecumseh Engine. Starts and runs on full choke only. No power when tiller engaged. Needle in jet corroded. float free.

I too have the same problem with my HS40 Tiller. Stumbled upon your site and your recomendations Thanks
I will be replacing the carb as the whole thing is a mess and a new carb couldn't hurt. I have, however been looking for that carb with no luck for matches. The number I took off the motor is HS40 555 33H. It is corroded so I was wondering if this was correct. Thanks

I had this problem on a White Snow Blower with a Techumceh $S40 engine i bought in1988. After 5-10 years it started giving me problems but I was always able to get the engine running with the power it needed to throw snow. This year it was the same. I got it started in Sept. and it ran good, or so it seemed. The first Colorado was a good one and it did not want to start. I finally got it started after about an hour. Sonnded good but would not run under load. I am now on the web looking for a Briggs and Stratton or a Honda engine to replace the Tecumseh. I have just had it after all these years. New replacements on the web are around $250 to $350 and the price will be worth it. Think I'll add electric start as at 62 I feel I don't need the stress anymore.

I feel your carb is dirty. if there is a fuel cup on the bottom of the carb remove it and clean the cup real good and also clean the needle valve as well. I have more small engines that would not run right because the needle valve was either plugged or almost plugged.

Mefco, your carburetor is probably dirty, plugging some of the internal ports and or jet. I will add detailed links to show how carb is cleaned. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

I had a snow king do this. It turned out to be the key on the crank was just about sheared. Did the need for use of full choke come on gradually?

Anyway, that was easily repaired but now won't start. I have fuel and spark with compression.

Latest think for me to try is adjusting the valves with a non-OEM method.

SOURCE: I have a 13 HP Honda that won`t run unless choke

You most likely need to set your valve clearances. If it is hard to pull over or the recoil snaps back after starting your valves need to be set for sure. This may not be the entire problem but it is a good start. Also change the spark plug, a bad plug will cause odd problems and is too cheap not to eliminate as a source. In addition check your fuel, pour a little out into a white container (I like spray paint can caps for this) and look at the color. If it is yellow to orange it is bad. You can pour it into you car, the car electronic sensors will compinsate for it quality but a small engine can't. Use a NGK BP6ES or BPR6ES plug.
You need:
Feeler gages
10mm open end wrench
14mm open end wrench
1 long shaft screw driver or rod
1 spark plug socket and ratchet

Remove the spark plug and the valve cover. Pull the recoil over slowly until the intake valve opens (intake is closes to the carb and it will go down when it opens). Now put your long screwdrive down the spark plug hole. Slow pull the engine over until the screwdriver handle is at it highest point, this is top dead center. It may take a few attempts. Now check your valve clearance between the rockers and the top of the valve. The intake should be .006 and the exhaust .008, both can be +/- .001. To adjust: hold the large nut with the 14mm then loosen the small one with the 10mm. Lefty loosey. Now turn your large nut until you get the correct setting and then tighten the small one the lock it in. It may take a few attempts and alway reverify your setting after you lock it down. Once done, find top dead center again and reverify. Now your valves are set.

SOURCE: EXCELL VR2500 power washer runs and then stops

I had the very same problem and nobody could help me until I was talking with a co-worker. Its a very easy fix. I couldn't believe it. I did this yesterday and it ran like a charm. You can either replace the head gasket or just by a good sealer to use on your existing gasket or replace it. I use Indian head gasket sealer on mine. The bolts on the bottom were lose causing a loss of compression. If you need more info you can email me (for free) and I will tell you exactly how to do it. [email protected]

Make sure the governor linkage is clean and works freely. A lot of times when you put a load on the machine, use it it stopps the fluttering.

Testimonial: "It is lopng pretty bad and will stop if let alone. This machine is about 2 years old and as I recal it started running rough in the middle of washing "

I have an older craftsman snow blower 10 hp. It starts ok with full choke, runs ok half choke, backfires with no choke-run position.

It's too lean; not enough fuel mixed with the air. Look for the main mixture screw--it should be a large screw with a spring under it on the carburetor. Run the engine until it's warm.

With the engine running, turn the screw outward (lefty-loosey) about 1/8 turn slowly and see if it improves. Slowly turn the screw back and forth until it runs best with the choke completely off. Then set it 1/8 turn richer (turn screw outward 1/8 turn) than the best position.

Reason for doing this: Conditions change, even the barometric pressure. Small engines run okay if they are a little rich but not if they are a little lean.

For mtd 3hp 2cycle motor only stays running when pushing prime repeatedly on full chock 5 sec

This is usually a symptom of blocked or partially obstructed metering passages in the carburetor. Carburetor should be removed and metering passages cleaned to restore fuel flow through the carburetor.
