Are both of the RAM 1GB, and did you make sure you bought the type of RAM that works for your computer?
It's not compatible RAM. Take the existing one out and buy a similiar and install it in your Mac.
Good luck.

dmdobbin, To restart after a "crash" or an "unexplained" power down, press & hold in the start button, don't just press it over and over, press and wait until it comes on. Same for a shutdown when all else fails if you can't force quit an application and every thing is locked up. let me know if that does it. randy320sgi
SOURCE: iMac G5
If it isn't the power supply, some of the early G5 imacs had a capacitor failure issue...mine just died, in fact. It was just shutting off by itself, even turned on once by itself....but tonight, when it shut down, it would not restart. I opened it up and looked and sure enough, 11 bulging/leaking capacitors. My local service center says there are two options: 1. new mother board-aprox $500 or replacing the capacitors- between $170-200. Until Dec 15, 2008..this was apparently covered under a special warranty extension program Apple had....typical!

Try inserting the master (system) disc that came with it and hold down the "C" key while booting. If it comes on with the OS X installer, try disk utility to reset permissions, if that fails to solve it, start again and this time when you get the install disc up get to options and do archive and install. If that has no effect, get out your Apple Care ( you do have it don't you?) and take /send it to Apple.
SOURCE: iMac freezes on startup. Can't use safemode.
Safe mode just requires holding shift down during start up and if it starts up at all this should be possible. Once in safe mode, you should be able to use Disk Utility to Verify disk and Fix Permissions. To Repair disk or with/without safe mode you need to startup with your install disk and on the first screen or after selecting language, use options to select Disk Utility. You really should tell us the MacOS version--10.3.9 10.4.11 10.5.8 or 10.6 are current and tell us your install disk version, too. With safe mode you can use terminal to run fsck to fix the disk, read the man page. Alternatives include starting up in Target Disk Mode (command+t at startup) and using your computer as an external disk for another Mac by Firewire or possibly USB, fixing it using the others software. These methods in descending ease.
A now permanently dark screen would indicate a bigger problem and a trip to an Apple store for an evaluation. Tell us your iMac model--could affect whether you can easily savage your disk data in this case.
