Our washing machine tripped out the electric circuit today when on the spin cycle. A fair bit of smoke was coming from the machine when I discovered it. I pulled the machine out and found a screw and a very large bolt underneath the machine on the floor. If I switch the machine back on now it does not trip the electric. Please could somebody advise me on what to check and where the large bolt may have come from?

you say tripped the switch?... are you talking about a circuit breaker???.. I was thinking maybe you have a bad breaker... If you had no problem before... maybe try in a differt plug in reciptical... if the washer has a short.. hard to find sometimes..like looking for needle in hay stack..

SOURCE: why does my washing machine trip the electric
Someone with a wattmeter needs to read the wattage load by the machine when washing. If the running load is greater than the rated load of the machine, then the problem is likely the motor itself or the drum bearings are going bad. If the electrical load is normal, then the breaker in the house electrical panel is either under-rated, or the breaker is defective. If the breaker is a 'ground fault' type, the washer may have current leakage to ground causing the breaker to trip. Another possibility is that there is another outlet that is on the same circuit and the combined load trips the breaker. Shut the breaker off and try any other sockets in the area to see if they went dead too. Hope this helps!

I've now done some further investigation. I took the back off the machine and turned the drum. I clicky, ratchetty sort of sound could be heard coming from the Motor area. I then removed the drive belt and confirmed that the drum now made no noise when turned. The motor did however make the clicky sound when turned. I removed the Motor from the machine and noticed that the grey plastic housing around one of the 'brushes' was blackened and slightly melted - this is probably the source of the smoke? I took both brushes off the Motor and found plenty of brush left in both as they automatically push out, presumably with some kind of spring inside. I cleaned up the copper contact surface of the motor and put it back together. I then tried the machine again on a spin cycle. The clicky, ratchetty sound was still there and it is like the brushed are clicking as they cross the grooves on the copper spingle part of the motor. As the Motor went faster I could hear a new sounds like electric crackling. I could then see arcing in the Motor. I think it is something to do with the brushes but am unsure whether trying to source replacements and fitting them is likely to cure the problem? Any ideas what the problem could be?
