System does not boot after update

I have TomTom XL. When I first connected the XL to my computer (MacOSX), it claimed a few useful updates. I agreed. At the end of the update cycle, TomTomHome asked me to execute 3 steps to complete the update (disconnect, reconnect, "say yes to the question asked"). This seems to be an ever recurring loop. TomTomHome uses terminology for these steps that is unclear and ambiguous to me (sorry folks, the computer talks German, no point in repeating this here). Ever since then, the XL shows a blinking red circle with white cross. The application seems to be on the XL; TomTomHome claims an up-to-date map on the XL.

TomTom service sent me what appears to a copy-and-paste answer. It did not help one bit.
...any suggestions?

same thing goin on on my mac.
it said to delete the stuff i just downloaded then try again...
maybe find a windows computer to try to update it on? thats what im going to try to do now

I deleted the stuff and reinstalled it.. it worked!!!!!
you can do it on your mac too...

You can't. You need to use Tomtom home. I don't think the XL series' use My Drive Connect but if home does bot work, it'll be My Drive Connect

How do I update my device

Step 1 Connect the TomTom One XL to your PC using the receiver's USB Cable.
Step 2 Launch the TomTom Home software on your PC and log in to your account.
Step 3 Click "Tools" and select "Use Latest Map Guarantee" to begin the update.

When you connect your TomTom (using the TomTom HOME application on your computer) ... and you sign in to your TomTom account, it will automatically do a scan/search to see if there's any update(s) for your TomTom device.
If you see the an update (available) for your Navigation software, select it and proceed to download and install it. MapShare updates are also identified and can be selected, downloaded and installed (free).
If you're asking whether you can update the map free ... the answer is NO ... not from the TomTom website. You'll have to buy a map update (subscription) and download the new version of the map and install it.

My TomTom XL arrived via Ebay with only the unit and car charger lead, no instructions or disc or lead for updates. Are these necessary and how do I acquire these please?

you do not need a disc but you do need a usb cable to update your tomtom...if you dont have one of these cables you can get them off ebay for under five dollars....see picture below

you can download the tomtom home program HERE just pick the operating system you are using on your computer. once you have downloaded the tomtom home application just follow the on screen directions.

you can download a copy of your manual HERE just scroll down the list till you find your XL, i would of given a direct link, but there are a few different XL models

you need to download tomtom home from the tomtom site. it will do it almost automatically.

you can download tomtom home HERE

just choose your operating system, then after you run it on your computer, just follow the on screen instructions.

Looying to update maps

Get the latest version of TOMTOM HOME
Install it and run the program.

Now with your GPS tunred off connect it to your computer via a short USB lead.

Now switch on the GPS and clikc yes when t asks if you want to connect to a computer.

TTH will now start up and from there you can update the tomtom itself.

My tom tom one xl won't turn on anymore but when I connect to the computer it turns on and shows a picture of a gps. still can't use it though. it is fully charged.

try hitting the reset button with a pin for about 15 seconds (this is located near the memory card slot) switch on to see if it boots up then install the latest updates from tomtom home, good luck
