Same problem with multiple games I play: around 20-30 minutes into a game, it will be working fine, then parts of the sound will cut off.
Example: playing FIFA, the announcers will stop giving play by play, but you'll still hear the ambient noises of the crowd, kicking the ball, etc. Or in guitar hero, I won't hear the notes of the song I'm playing, just the background of the track.
Then, when I try to hit start to go to a menu (or when the half ends in FIFA, or a song ends in GH), it won't load and I'll have to shut off the ps3. Once the sounds freeze this way, nothing at all will load. Has happened the same way the last 4 or 5 times I've tried to play something on the ps3.

The Playstation 3 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser does eventually burn out. The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the game will stop reading altogether (even though movies sometimes still work). Eventually movies will stop working and the whole laser will eventually die.

Try CPR in New York City. They are faster than the
manufacturer, and cheaper!They

I have the same problem. My games freeze after 5 minutes. Same with blue rays but dvds play fine. I have reformatted the hard drive and formatted the file system. Nothing has worked. Hearing through multiple sources the blue ray laser is going out or the latest firmware update could be causing this. Hard to know for sure ... major disappoint. I have the 80 gig. 2 years old just starting doing this three days ago. Any other suggestions?
Try using a can of air to blow out the fan area. Even though its well ventilated it may be full of dust. It sounds like an overheating issue. Also look into aftermarket fan/cooling solutions, that dont plug directly into the PS3 and have there own outlet power plug.
