Hello rbath:
I'm having a different problem with my HS51A and I'm trying to find what the service manuals says for how the indicators are lighting up. Instead of what you got, in my case both TEMP and COVER were flashing.
After that, I unplugged the unit, and when I plugged it back in now I dont get those flashes, what i see now is the standby indicator switch rapidly colors, green to red and so on, very fast. Doenst do anything else.
Any chance you can tell me what the service manual says about it?
I'm going crazy, I love this projector and the budget now doesnt allow me to get a new unit. At least I would like to know how bad the issue is and prepare mentally for the huge repair bill.

the thermocoupler fuse is what it is called by the way. i also saw that it could be the "power board" which could or could not be synonymous with the thermocoupler. anyway, again it is a common problem with these models. Scott Jackson, MS

The flashing light is indicating that a fault has been detected, and it is staying in "protect mode". First disconnect all cables from the processor (except the power cord) and then power up the processor. This will eliminate the possibility of a shorted cable or a problem with any connected components. f the light still flashes, there is an internal problem and the processor will require profesional service.

with both lights solid. according to the manual all it says is (there is an electrical failure inside the unit, please take to an authorized servicer). if you are able to do this yourself you will need the schematics and a voltmeter to start testing your voltages. your lamp is fine so dont waste your money replacing that anymore. if you would like the service manual send me an email to [email protected].

The SONY Owner's Manual for the KDS55A2000 does not state what the 4 times blinking Power LED means.
However, my Sony Extended Care Service support insists that the projection lamp is the cause for the 4X blinking LED
Power light.
I do not agree but am forced to buy a replacement lamp (not cheap) to prove that the problem is probably the fan, as the TV Technician states elsewhere in these FixYa support questions and answer

Hummm .... I was determining my fate from the user manual (page 47). It does not reference your situation and I can't say I saw anyone else mention the Stand-By indicator doing light shows during my many net searches???
I just wish I could find a resource for the main boards. Doing a swap is pretty simple. I love mine too, but I'm dead in the water.
Good luck!!!
