Fine vertical lines began appearing about an inch from the left side of the screen running from top to bottom, beginning with 3 or 4 lines, now 15 or 20 lines, about a month ago. During a 5 hour trip, the lines eventually went away, but always come back when the stereo is first turned on. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it.
The screen has a connection for each line on the display and the soldier on some of these connections has gone intermittent. When the unit becomes warm enough, the soldier expands and the connections become more consistent.
If you're skilled, this can be repaired. If not, either replace the unit or take it to a reputable technician.

this discoloration is the begining of the lcd panel being thermal damaged. this happens when the projector is being used for a long period of time and then being shut off using the switch on the rear of the projector instead of the on/off on top or the remote. to fix it it will have to be replaced. very expensive major repair.
Try moving a medium powered magnet (not one for picking up heavy objects and not a refrigerator holding one) over the distorted area. If that doesn't work, try a more powerful one. This worked for my Toshiba LCD. Good luck!
This sounds like one of the driver boards at the bottom or top of the screen has an intermittent fault. The set will have to be taken in to a service centre.
I would suspect a connection breaking down as the set heats up. A shop will probably have to put the set in a stand to hold it while they check for loose connections or defective components inside. Not a DIY job by any means. If this line went completely through the picture either vertically or horizontally and stayed there then this would have indicated a failure in the Panel itself. A thin Line any where on the screen consisting of one pixel in width is a Panel Failure according to Hitachi.
