I have a Compaq presario CQ60-420US and I was working on it when I saw the icon that the battery was low. On my way to plug it in, the computer died. I have not been able to charge it or turn it on since. Does the batter need replaced or is it something else?
Is not necessarily a problem of the battery, the screen is also related to, a change in the LCD.This should help you http://www.lcdinverters.net/Laptop-Inverter/Compaq/Compaq.html

When you install a new battery and remove a battery always make sure the laptop is completely shut off and have the power cord removed so that you avoid any possible power surge.
Batteries generally don't last much longer than a year and I have found removing the power cord or battery when it is off to be a good practice.
Before you charge a battery make sure it is run most all the way down. Recharging a battery when it is not run down can give it a memory and you may only be able to charge it up to the point you started charging it.
Anyway, if the computer won't charge a new battery then you could have a bad motherboard. To be sure try another battery.

Sounds like the power supply might have died, probably before the battery did. Once the battery had run down, the computer simply died. Easiest way to check this would be to take it to a computer shop - they shouldn't charge you very much just to check the power supply - or try to locate another supply just like it and see if the computer will boot from the new power supply.

Try booting into the BIOS Screen and resetting to factory defaults. If that fails suggest swapping the hard drive out and re-install the Operating System - Save your old data and migrate the data off the old drive. You can buy an external drive adapter to connect the harddrive to a USB port to migrate you data.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: Can't determine if battery is dead or charger.....
Try turning on the PC itself without a charger. If that doesn't turn it on then try holding down the power button for about 3 seconds, it sometimes does that. If all else fails, most likely the battery is dead. (unless you have a brand new compaq)

U may have a dead board. They average $285 plus labor. A shop should be able to test it on a volt meter see if the power grid is burnt for around $35. then u will know what ur in for. If its a bad board just replace the laptop I wouldnt repair that problem on an older laptop.
