My TV wouldn't turn on and so I unplugged it, then plugged it in again. It turned on this time but now I have a distored screen. It seems a bit blurry, especially around the edges where there is also a rainbow glow. What happened and is it repairable?

Unplug the power cord, wait a few minutes then plug it back in and check for a loose connection where the cord attaches to the TV. If it won't turn on after that, it's time to use the warranty.
Based on the lower specification of this TV any repair is more than likely going to exceed the cost to replace it, One of the internal components has failed and generally unless you are handy with an oscilloscope it's not worth fixing.
Can you unplug the TV for about 15 seconds, and then plug back in and watch the stand-by light. Tell me how many time the stand-by light blinks in regular intervals. If it doesn't blink at all, you need to change a fuse on the g-board. Once this is done run back through the stand-by blink light process, and more troubleshooting can be done if problem isn't already solved. If the stand-by light just keeps blinking with a count over ten just tell me, and I'll look for other possibilities.
On older Sony, sometimes a power surge causes the set to be in shut down mode. Try unplugging for 5 minutes and then plug in and try. This many times will fix.
Just try to reset so picture will back to normal again, some LCD TVs have a reset button. If available and accessible, try using the reset buttons before using the steps below. Using the reset buttons can save time. 1. Unplug the LCD TV power cord from the power outlet. 2. Unplug any connected devices (DVD, Set-top boxes, etc...) 3. Press and hold the LCD TV power button for five seconds. 4. Plug the LCD TV power cord back into the power outlet and turn on the TV. 5. Open the on-screen menu to confirm that the LCD TV is responding again. 6. Turn off the LCD TV and reconnect the devices. 7. Turn on the LCD TV.

You first need to rplace the outlet if it sparks where the surge protector is plugged in as it should not spark for any reason. then you need to make sure thast its not the outlet causing your problem by running an long extensition corn or moving the set to a differant outlet.
