Lathe motor making noise - Jet JWL-1236, 12" x 34-1/2" Wood Lathe with Stand, 3/4HP, 1Ph, 115/230V

Well my first question would be where is the noise originating from. is it from the machine or from the tool?

I don't have much knowledge on lathe. Check this thread I found on google. Hope that helps.

Motor should have red push botton on back or bottom of motor. This is reset over load breaker . Should be out, just push in until it clicks.

It sounds like the motor is bogging down due to bad bearings or something is making the shaft too hard to spin. Make sure all the spindles are free. If its happening under load, make sure the lathe gets up to speed before trying to make any cuts.

If it hums when its turned on look at the capacitors. Visually inspect the cooper winderings, if there is any discolored portions, ones that are blackened. It might have burned up a coil.

Thats a good thing, means you making chips. lol. What kind of noise exactly?

To change the drive belt on an Ammco 4000, you must first remove the 90 degree angle PTO (power take off) gear assembly which is driven off the back of the big pulley. Two small allen head screws hold it tight.

Pull the PTO gear assembly out of the disc-feed gearbox. If there are colored shims between the gearbox and the PTO assembly, you must make sure not to loose. If they drop off, be sure to replace them with a dab of grease.

Rotate the red knob at the back of the machine and the motor assembly will unlock and rotate upwards. Replace the drive belt.

To adjust the drive belt tension properly--loosen the 3/4 inch nut on the back of the machine, and the motor will drop down. Tighten the 3/4 inch nut and then rotate the red knob back until the belt is taught.

Replace the PTO gear assembly--making the rotating part with the protruding pin is centered on the big pulley. Tighten the allen head cap screws.

Turn on the machine. If the PTO is making noise--you have not correctly is correctly. Repeat the centering process until the machine runs without rattling or vibration.

Usually not. Is lathe leveled, and base secured, check for soft feet. This can set up vibration and load bearings.If motor is belt drive check belt condition, pulley alignment, belt tension.

The knocking sound is NOT normal, and you should not ignore it.

The tt200 is a HIGH TORQUE turntable, and as such is a highly accurate lathe for the accurately determined speed of the platter.

The lathe is in need of adjustment, which is recommended.
