I just bought this on ebay and the seller told me to pull the pole all the way out but it doesn't seem to completely come out. am i doing something wrong? Is the metal pole suppose to come all the way out unless you are using the attachment?

If the brush roll is worn out or not working properly it will not pick up even light debris like hair and lint even if you have great suction. Check the brush roll first.

SOURCE: Dyson DC17 now noisy and harsh click

I am having the same issue with the clicking noise when I try to open mine. Dyson has told me it's "not their problem" What it is is the little curved part that moves to change the suction to the wand vs the brush is catching on the tab that holds it up. It's out of alignment somewhat. Mine has been so bad that it has fallen off each time I open the vacumm. A costly repair of $172 each time. I can't get the piece put back on by myself.
The repair man finally filed down the little tab at the top that it hooks to when you set the vacumm upright. The curved piece is still falling off, so its back to the shop again. Dyson, still swears it's not their issue. The heck it isn't!
My vacumm is the same age as yours. I love it, we have 3 very large dogs that shed heavily, the vacum gets used 3x a day. It's the wear and tear on that tab. I'd love to know if you can get dyson to listen to these complaints any better than I have.

The sound with the brush- is something caught inbetween the brush and the cover? Do you have any smell? I had to replace my "lifetime guarenteed" belt.
Good luck

SOURCE: My dyson DC17 will not turn on unless the handle

Not sure if I can help, but I'll try. The DC17 has two motors: the vacuum motor and a separate motor for the brush bar. It is normal that the brush motor works only when the handle is pulled back in the vacuuming position - that's the way it's made. So, when you say "my DC17 won't turn on", I'm not sure if you mean the vac motor, the brush motor, or both. If the vacuum motor won't turn on, then you've got a problem I can't help you with.
As for no suction through the hose, I have to ask... are you sure your vacuum motor is working at all? Even with the hose stored away, the machine still relies on suction through that hose. If you're sure the motor is working, then either you've got a blockage that you haven't yet found (there's at least one inspection port, a sort of U tube at bottom right of machine, that you need to check), or it could be that you've got a hole in the flexible hose (which opens only when the hose is extended).
Sorry if this is a bit garbled, but I'm puzzled by your problem. If you want to come back with more details I'll try again for you!

SOURCE: My Dyson 14 Animal seems to not have the suction

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

Firstly check that the brush bar control on the cleaner head is in the correct position. You may have switched the brush bar off the last time you used it or the dial may hav got knocked when you vacuumed under some low furniture.

If this is in the correct position but the brush bar is still not turning, switch the machine off and remove the soleplate by turning the 3 fasteners on the base of the machine and checking for blockages and remove any threads or hairs around the brush bar.

I would recommend washing the filter if it hasnt been done for a while.

You may find it useful to follow the blockage procedure and filter washing instructions in your user guide, however if you no longer have this available you download a replacement for free via the support section on our website at www.dyson.com.

I hope that this information is useful to you.

Kind regards
Darran

SOURCE: My dyson dc17 will not roll across the carpet,

Turn on the beater bar with the gray button next to the red power button. The powered beater bar will "propel" the vacuum across the carpet.

Why does my Dyson DC17 now push really ******* carpet?

Have you correctly replaced the glider that covers the brush? You need to make sure that the clips are fully seated .

Suction is terrible

First be sure that all parts are securely attached, even removing and reattaching can help ensure a properly seated connection. Next check to make sure the filters are clean. Finally check the carpet beater head, to make sure it's free from hair and other debris.

If none of this works, call or email Dyson, even if your warranty is expired, they maybe able to help out further. They have GREAT customer service!

My carpet nap is very thick and it is very hard to vacuum with my Dyson dc17 animal. I need to know if there is a way to adjust the height on the vacuum

Hi Deb,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty using DC17 on this particular carpet type. DC17 is engineered to adjust automatically to different floor types, and does not need manual height adjustment.

Carpet manufacturers sometimes recommend vacuuming deep or delicate carpet piles with the rotating brush bar turned off. We'd recommend checking with the manufacturer of your carpeting as they'll be best placed to offer advice on the correct way of cleaning it. To turn off the brush bar on DC17, just use the silver brush control switch next to the red on/off switch.

It's also worth checking that the soleplate is fitted correctly. Any dirt or residue on the soleplate can be removed with a damp cloth - make sure it's completely dry before refitting it. You can find out how to remove and replace it here: http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=962&product=DC17-ANIMAL

I hope this helps, but if you would like further advice after you've given this a try, please email your details to [email protected]. One of our experts will be in touch as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

When I vacuum carpets the hose suction does not stop and the main brush area is losing suction because of it.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If your machine continues to have suction through the wand after you've reclined it into the vacuuming position, a blockage may be jamming the changeover valve. To check for this, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMAL

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call us free on 1-866-693-9766, or email us at [email protected]

My Dyson DC17 gets carpet fibers stuck between the brush bar belt and where the belt attaches to the machine (not the brush bar end of the belt) Then it shreds the carpet fiber and I have to tear it apart...

Hi there,

If you're concerned that the amount of fibre your carpet is shedding seems to be excessive, I'd recommend consulting your carpet manufacturer to determine if this is normal, as the shedding period will vary according to carpet type and usage. They may also be able to offer advice on the best way to vacuum it, as they sometimes suggest vacuuming certain carpet types using suction only.

Kind regards,

Jack

Very hard to push. It started gradually but now its nearly impossible to vacuum the carpet. Is this an easy fix?

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If the cleaner seems more difficult than usual to push, it's a good idea to check the soleplate for damage, and to remove any threads, hair and other obstructions from the brushbar. The easiest way to do this is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=961&product=DC17-ANIMAL

You may also want to contact your carpet manufacturer to check it's suitable for cleaning with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a revolving brushbar. Manufacturers sometimes recommend cleaning certain types of carpeting using suction only.

If you have any further questions or concerns, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you, and recommend the best course of action. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to [email protected], someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Dc17 Animal - doesn't roll backwards smoothly, it hops or bounces when on carpet

I found that if I pull back too fast, it tends to bounce the front end, I have slowed down on the return trip
